Block Parents hold school visits
By Scott Nixon
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
USBORNE — The South Huron Block Parents
spent last week visiting area schools to remind
students of some important safety lessons.
The visits took place during National Block
Parent Week. In addition to learning how and
when to access a Block Parent home, students
were given information on how to have a safe
Halloween.
"You're never too small to learn how to pro-
tect yourself," Block Parents past chairperson
Lois Godbolt told Usborne Central students last
Thursday. Safety talks were also held at Exeter
Public School, Precious Blood, Stephen Central
and Our Lady of Mount Carmel.
Godbolt showed
students what a
Block Parent sign
looks like and what
it means when such
a sign is posted in a
window.
In the rural areas,
children should look
for Block Parent
stickers on mailbox-
es.
Students were told
that Block Parents
are "safe strangers"
who have passed
OPP background
checks.
Children were told
to go to a Block
Parent home if:
• they get lost;
• they get hurt;
• they are being
bullied;
• if an animal is
bothering them;
• if a stranger in a
car is following
them;
• if there is bad
weather.
Children are not to
use Block Parent
homes if they need
to use a bathroom or need a drink.
Students were also shown a video during
which they were told to keep a safe distance
from strangers, to never take shortcuts, never
change their route to school, never to pick up
needles or anything else on the ground and to
have a secret password with their parents.
Information on the Block Parent program
was sent home with the students for their par-
ents. Godbolt said more Block Parents are
needed, particularly in the rural areas. In town,
she said she'd like to see two Block Parent
homes on each street.
OPP Const. Joanna Van Mierlo was also on
hand to go over Halloween safety rules with
students.
