Centralia UC gearing up for its turkey supper

CENTRALIA - On Sun., Oct. 22, Rev. Michelle Down
welcomed everyone to worship at Centralia United
Church.
Marjorie Johns provided organ accompa-
niment for the first hymn, This is God's
Wondrous World. Following prayers, the
choir sang a lovely anthem.
The children's hymn was To Show By Touch and
Word. Rev. Michelle met with the children and young
people to talk about the meaning of peace, and their role
in helping to achieve it.
She read scripture from Psalm 104 and Mark 10:35-
45.
Rev. Michelle's sermon was entitled "I Got the Power".
There were several announcements about interesting
upcoming activities. On Sat., Oct. 28, ladies of the UCW
are serving a "Harvest Luncheon" at 12 p.m. Everyone
is invited to come and enjoy old-fashioned comfort
foods, including hearty chicken soup, tea biscuits, and
apple crisp. Tickets are $5 and are available from June
Essery at 519-228-6228.
There will also be some delicious fudge in assorted

varieties available for sale. It will be $5 per piece or $12
for three pieces and will be sure to satisfy your sweet
tooth!
Centralia and Zion West will host the annual Turkey
Supper at the South Huron Recreation Centre on Sun.,
Nov. 12. Dinner will be served from 5 to 7 p.m. and will
include delicious desserts of pies and
cheesecakes. Tickets are $13 for adults,
$6 for children aged 6 to 12, and free for
pre-schoolers.

There will also be a silent auction with some interest-
ing things available for purchase.
Congregation members are asked to contact Brent or
sign up at church to bake pies and cheesecakes. Also let

Crokinole Club back in full swing

VARNACORRESPONDENT
VARNA - Magnolia Manor Bed
and Breakfast closed its doors per-
manently after 15 years in business.
With mixed feelings Ted and Carol
Pakenham would like to say good
bye to all their friends, neighbours
and business colleagues. They have
enjoyed their time in Varna but are
now returning to Nova Scotia where
they lived many years ago and are
looking forward to the next part of
their journey in life. Carol and Ted
will be missed by the Varna
Community and are wished the best
as they settle in Nova Scotia.
Sixteen regular members of the
Varna Crokinole Club met for the
first of the season last Tuesday night
for progressive euchre. Top winners
were Conrad Sitter with 34 pts, Ab
Leitch 33, David Whyte 32, Joe
Fulop 32 and Joan Beierling 30.
Rules of Play were handed out about
the World Crokinole Championship
in Tavistock. Registrants are
encouraged to read the rules care-
fully. Crokinole dates were set for
the season and the Club will meet
again on Tues., Nov. 14 at 8 p.m. in
the Varna Church.
Varna U.C.W. meet Thurs., Nov. 2
at 7:30 p.m. at the Church.
The Stan Lee Club will meet Wed.,
Nov. 8 at 2 p.m. at the complex,
Happy 75th birthday to Carol
Simons. An open house was held at
the Bayfield Town Hall in Carols
Honour and many from the Varna
Community dropped in and shared
their best wishes and had birthday
cake with Carol. The beautiful red
roses at Carol's party were shared
with the Varna Church Congregation
for Anniversary Sunday. Varna
United Church is celebrating their
107th year. Pastor Elly Van Bergen
welcomed everyone and took a look
at the life and work of the church
followed with the Call to Worship.
The gift of music by the choir was
He's Everything to Me. An
Anniversary Prayer was sung with
responses as led by the choir.
A gift of music and reflection was
given by guest Rev. Schwindt from
Clinton. He played Making a Joyful
Noise with his sticks and converted
liquor bottles as he calls them that
have just the right amount of water
in them set up like the keys on a
piano. This very musically inclined
man also played Whispering Hope
and His Eye is on a Sparrow on his
violin, played a number on his guitar
and also a mouth organ.
Church service this Sun., Nov. 5
will be in Varna which will be
Remembrance Sunday.
Community Halloween Party
The Rec Committees Annual
Family Halloween Party held last
Saturday night was very successful
once again. Over 100 people showed
up and almost everyone in costume,
parents and kids alike. They
watched movies, had a costume
parade and judged best decorated
pumpkins. Best witches were
Cienna Freeman Powers, Cierra
Whetstone and Samantha Lawson.
Scariest went to Connor Knox, Sean
Vader and Aubrey Freeman Powers.
Most Fanciful were Lauren Hayter,
Amber Laws and Jenna Payne.
Youngest one in costume was five
month old Chace Turner. Most orig-
inal was Magnus Claussen and the
best Disney character was Ryan
Laws.
Best decorated pumpkins were 5
and under Galt Bruch and Jessie
Simpson. Six to nine years went to
Thomias Bruch and Sierra and
Carter Burt. Ten years and up went
to Dominique Poirier.
Hot dogs and popcorn were pro-
vided and Mothers brought treats for
dessert.

congregational meeting will be held following church.
