New owner for Exeter Cleaning Centre
EXETER — Owning the Exeter
Cleaning Centre is something
Nancy Mason has wanted to do for
years.
She finally made the plunge in
July, buying the Main Street laun-
dromat and holding a grand open-
ing last weekend with door prizes
and refreshments.
Mason started working at Exeter
Cleaning Centre in 1994 and says
the late owners Pieter and Joan
Westerhout always wanted her to
buy. With the encouragement of the
Westerhouts' daughters, Mason
eventually decided she could make
the deal.
"I always considered buying ... It
was one of those dreams, but I did-
n't think I could do it."
Mason has made minor changes
to the inside of the building and has
painted both the inside and outside.
"Things are going really well,"
she says.
Juggling the responsibilities of her
business and her part-time job at
Community Living - South Huron,
in addition to being a mom of four,
keeps Mason busy, but she says
she's lucky to have two jobs she
loves. An Exeter resident for 20
years, Mason says when she goes
home at night, she can't wait to go
back to work in the morning.
"I love it."
New business owner — Exeter's Nancy Mason, middle, bought the
Exeter Cleaning Centre in July, holding her grand opening last weekend.
From left are her children April, Steven, Jasmine and Adam. Mason says
she is pleased with how things have gone since she took over.

Hensall family chosen for Habitat build
HENSALL — There are two significant news items
from Habitat for Humanity Huron County (HFH HC).
The board of directors recently announced a partner
family has been selected for the Hensall build, which
will begin in the spring of 2007, and the build in
Wingham is close to being finished.
Jennifer Walker and her children, 17 -year-old
Katherine and two-year-old Adam, have been selected
as the partner family that will buy the Habitat house
scheduled to be built in Hensall in the spring. Walker
says she is looking forward to starting the process of
occupying her new house and "it will give me a sense
of pride." She further went on to say, "I feel I have a

future now. It will change my life and it will change
my kids' lives. A home changes things."
Walker looks forward to gardening and turning her
house into a home. She suffered a significant change
to her life in 1992 when an automobile accident left
her disabled and set her back both financially and
emotionally. She has since worked hard to make a life
for her children and herself. Walker sees this opportu-
nity to buy a Habitat house as a turning point in the
life of her family.
Wingham build proceeds
The Huron county Habitat organization remains
busy as construction nears the end in Wingham.
"This has been a very successful build," states build
chairperson Terry Taylor. Jacob and Tina Hiebert and
their five children have already completed their
"sweat equity" hours as they have worked hard in the
building of their new house. The family will soon own
their own home as they move in within the next
month.
Habitat for Humanity Huron County chairperson
Paul Dyck explains "even though we have now had
two successful builds in Clinton and Wingham, the fact
remains that we had to put off the Hensall build until
next spring." The organization had hoped to begin the
Hensall build this year but due to a shortage of funds,
the build has been delayed until next year.
"This will give us the opportunity to start the Hensall
build from a better position as we will have an extra
eight months to raise funds for it," explained Dyck.
The organization receives no government funding or
outside funds, only donations from local Huron County
residents and from the fundraising efforts of Habitat
for Humanity Huron County and other local groups.
Trivitt Memorial Church in Exeter recently held a
Thanksgiving service, concert and chicken barbecue
where all the proceeds raised will be donated to HFH
HC. In November, a Christmas Choral Evening will be
held that will also see the funds raised earmarked for
the Hensall build. In addition, many local service clubs
and individuals, companies and tradespeople have
stepped forward to help make the local Habitat affili-
ate fulfill its mission to eliminate poverty housing in
Huron County.
Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit, independent
housing program made up of local affiliates that are
locally managed. Habitat for Humanity Huron County
is entirely operated by volunteers. Habitat provides a
"hand up, not a hand out" by selling homes to quali-
fied families through "sweat equity" and non-interest
mortgages. Each local affiliate must meet the strict
guidelines of Habitat for Humanity Canada. Started in
1976 in the United States,
Habitat for Humanity Huron County can be contact-
ed at www.habitathuroncounty.ca, or at P.O. Box 68,
Hensall, Ont., NOM 1X0, or a message can be left at
262-5222.
