UWO program has roots '°'"""
with Catholic school board
By Stew Slater
SPECIAL TO THE TIMES -ADVOCATE
DUBLIN — `Tutors on the Bus' —
it's not the name of the latest
Hollywood comedy, nor is it a new
children's song.
It's the new and improved version
of a program for University of
Western Ontario (UWO) students,
first introduced last year by the
Huron -Perth Catholic District School
Board.
Under the program, about 30 third
and fourth-year students — almost
all of whom aspire to enter teacher's
college in the coming years —hop on
a bus in London on Tuesday morn-
ing, travel to Stratford, and spend
the morning providing instruction
and inspiration to elementary stu-
dents.
"Each (UWO) student generally
works with about five different (ele-
mentary school) students throughout
the morning," explained Huron -
Perth education superintendent
Martha Dutrizac, who was instru-
mental in introducing the program
last year and then fine-tuning it for
better effectiveness this year.
The university students are back in
London by just after noon.
"They're not forfeiting their major
commitment — which is their uni-
versity studies —by being involved in
this program," Dutrizac explained.
King's University College, which is
a part of UWO, is a partner in
`Tutors on the Bus', as is the
Literacy and Numeracy Directorate
of the provincial Education Ministry.
Huron -Perth staff conducted an ori-
entation session at the university
earlier this month, both to drum up
interest and prepare prospective
participants for what the program
requires.
According to Dutrizac, last year's
version of the program suffered
from both a lack of solid routine and
a lack of long-term commitment
from the participants. It started with
14 university students on the bus,
and dwindled through the year.
This year, a routine has been
established by scheduling 18
Tuesdays between October and
March for the program.
And Dutrizac is confident this
year's orientation process will play a
role in increasing commitment from
the participants.
She notes most, if not all, faculties
of education will look favourably at
such experience among applicants.
"It's got lots of positives for every-
body," the superintendent said.
Seminar looks at bullying issue
By Stew Slater
SPECIAL TO THE TIMES -ADVOCATE
DUBLIN — As part of ongoing efforts to
both increase parent involvement in
schools and increase awareness of bully-
ing, the Huron -Perth Catholic District
School Board is hosting what it's calling a
`Professional Development Day' for school
councils Nov. 18 in Clinton.
Titled "Imagine a School Without
Bullying: Parents and educators building
safe and healthy schools," the morning -
long symposium will feature a presentation
from a keynote speaker followed by break-
out sessions. The keynote speaker is Stu
Auty, founding administrator of the Vanier
School for Young Offenders in Brampton
At a regular board meeting Monday, education
superintendent Dan Parr provided trustees with
updates on both initiatives: anti -bully-
ing and parental involvement in
schools.
"All the research is showing that
when parents are involved in schools,
not only do their children achieve at a
higher level, but all of the children in
the school achieve at a higher level,"
Parr said.
All schools in the board recently
received a `parent involvement
library,' including about 25 books
exploring topics which might be of
interest to parents becoming involved
in their children's school. And Parr
reiterated the invitation for parents to
attend the school council event Nov. 18 at St. Anne's
secondary school.
"All the research is
showing that when
parents are involved in
schools, not only do
their children achieve at
a higher level, but all of
the children in the
school achieve at a
higher level,"
DAN PARR
EDUCATION SUPERINTENDENT
and the former chairperson of the Ontario Safe School
Task Force.

Madeline (Maddie) is a 4 -year-old spayed female.

getting along with the other cats in her new home.
They are continuing to care for her until a new
home can be found. Maddie is a small girl, less than
7 pounds. She has medium length hair and a white
patch on her chest. She is very sweet, but not used
