Cows selling $2 higher at market
Brussels Livestock Market Report for the
week ending Oct. 20.
Total receipts
3,223 head of cattle, 713 lambs and goats.
Summary
Tuesday: The fed steers and heifers sold $2 lower.
The choice steers and heifers sold 90 to 93 with
sales to 115. Second -cut sold 85-90 with the cows
selling $2 higher.
Thursday: The veal sold on a good strong market.
Sheep, lambs, and goats sold on a steady market.
Friday: Calves and yearlings sold on a steady
trade.
Steers
There were 585 steers on offer.
Jim Howatt of Londesborough, consigned 28 steers
averaging 1492 lbs, selling for an average of 91.93.
With one blk steer weighing 1265 lbs, selling to Holly
Park Meat Packers for 97.
Harold M. Caroll of Wardsville, consigned 27 steers
averaging 1530 lbs, selling for an average of 92.55.
With eight char steers averaging 1490 lbs, selling to
Dominion Meat Packers for 94.75.
Christian F. Bauman of Linwood, consigned 25 steers
averaging 1355 lbs, selling for an average of 90.11.
With two blk steers averaging 1240 lbs, selling for
93.50.
John Wiersma of Blyth, consigned seven steers aver-
aging 1444 lbs selling for an average of 91.97. With
one blk steer weighing 1440 lbs, selling for 93.25.
Allan Thornton of Gorrie, consigned one limo steer
weighing 1340 lbs, selling for 93.

piedx heifer weighing 1195 lbs, selling to FAB Meat
Products for 100.50.
Mike Dalton of Goderich, consigned four heifers aver-
aging 1385 lbs, selling for an average of 93.24. With
one limo heifer weighing 1360 lbs, selling to FAB Meat
Products for 97.25.
Gerald & Doris Coe of Meaford, consigned 45 heifers
averaging 1183 lbs, selling for an average of 91.44.
With seven limo heifers averaging 1149 lbs, selling to

sales to 59. D1 & D2: 40-45 D3: 34-40; D4: 20-30.
Mark Rankin of Brigden, consigned three cows aver-
aging 1438 lbs, selling for an average of 51.09. With
one limo cow weighing 1475 lbs selling to St. Helen's
Meat Packers for 59.
Alex McLean of New Leskeard, consigned four cows
averaging 1386 lbs, selling for an average of 43.80.
With one herf cow weighing 1105 lbs, selling for 54.
Highland Crest Farms of Lucknow, consigned two
cows averaging 1710 lbs, selling for an average of
52.11. With one char cow weighing 1805 lbs, selling
for 54.
Bulls
There were 14 bulls on offer. 39.50-50 sales to 65.50
William Clarke of Grand Valley consigned two bulls
averaging 1545 lbs, selling for an average of 55.47.
With one limo bull weighing 1500 lbs, selling for 65.50.
Allan Willits of Wingham, consigned one char bull
weighing 2295 lbs, selling for 50.
Veal
There were 198 head of veal on offer. Beef: 120-140
sales to 146; Good Holstein: 108-118 sales to 123;
Medium Holstein: 95-105; Plain and Heavy Holstein,
Russia to open border for Canadian beef
OTTAWA - Russia will open the border to
Canadian cattle and boneless beef, announced
the Minister of Agriculture and Agri -Food and
Minister for the Canadian Wheat

After discussions between senior
officials from Agriculture and Agri -
Food Canada, the Canadian Food
Inspection Agency, representatives
of the Canadian genetics and meat
sectors and Russian Agriculture
Minister Alexei Gordeyev, Canada
and Russia have agreed on
imports of Canadian breeding cat-
tle.

tain boneless beef products, subject to final
approval of technical conditions.
Russian officials will visit Canada to approve
beef plants and shipments of live cattle.
"This is great news for our livestock and beef
industry and will benefit both our countries.
We also look forward to working with Russia
to strengthen its own livestock and dairy sec-
tor," says Strahl.
Discussions were held in Moscow regarding
close co-operation between Canada and
Russia on the development of Russia's live-
stock sector.

The IEC is a bilateral initiative
created in 1993 under the
terms of the Canada -Russia
Agreement on Economic Co-
operation to promote trade and
economic relations between
Canada and Russia.

ment for Canada and signals a
step forward in restoring inter-

beef and cattle producers," says
Emerson.
Strahl extended an invitation to Gordeyev to
visit Canada, discussing areas of co-operation
in livestock development between Russia and
Canada.
Before the detection of Canada's first case of
Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) in
May 2003, Russian imports of Canadian
breeding cattle and beef were more than $4
million.
The agreement on export certificates for
breeding cattle and boneless beef is a first step
in fully restoring and developing greater trade
with Russia in the future.
