ZURICH —
Representatives of the
Ausable Bayfield
Conservation Authority
(ABCA) collected water
quality data Oct. 18,
participating in World
Water Monitoring Day.
The ABCA was joined
by about 50 different
countries, all of whom
will enter their data col-
lected on a permanent
worldwide database to
be viewed by each other
as part of World Water
Monitoring Day. The
ABCA will also add
their findings to their
existing local
water data-
base.

cian Hope Brock sam-
pled water at the Zurich
Drain, and collected
bugs through Benthic
Macroinvertebrates by
loosening the soil in the
bottom of the water and
catching bugs with a
net.
The ABCA promotes
Water Monitoring Day
for several reasons. The
event recognized world-
wide helps "to raise
awareness and monitor
water quality," says
Veliz.
Veliz says it's also
important to keep track
of the water quality
because it is used for
many purposes, includ-
ing both recreational
uses and watering for
livestock.
"Water is one of our
most vital resources,"
says Veliz in an ABCA
news release.

They are also involved
in smaller watershed
studies like the Zurich
Drain Water Quality
Enhancement Project
which stated in an
ABCA news release
"aims to improve water
quality through the
implementation of land
stewardship projects
and Beneficial
Management Practices
(BMPs)."
"Monitoring in this
smaller watershed
allows us to identify
potential water quality
problems and provides
a baseline for compari-
son with future moni-
toring," says Brock.
"Many landowners
have already initiated
stewardship projects
and we hope that con-
tinued efforts by water-
shed residents will
result in improved
water quality in the
Zurich Drain," Brock
adds.
Watershed report
cards will be shared
with the public Dec. 1,
unveiled for the first
time at the ABCA bring-
ing the community up to
date on the conditions
of different areas in the
watershed.
This is part of the
ABCA's 60th
Anniversary celebra-
tions `Sixty Projects for
Sixty Years' this year.
The report cards are
designed to attempt to
provide individual
landowners, municipali-
ties and organizations
with simple ways to
improve water quality
conditions.
