ABCA annual Night Hike and Owl Prowl Nov. 4
EXETER — The Ausable Bayfield
Conservation Authority (ABCA) is
hosting its popular annual Night
Hike and Owl Prowl Nov 4.
The evening hike begins at 7
p.m. with a presentation at the
workshop.
"The nocturnal creatures active
at night are really incredible,"
says ABCA conservation education
specialist Julie Hicks.
"They have many fascinating
adaptations to their environment,"
Hicks adds.
More than 75 people came out to
enjoy Morrison Dam Conservation
Area in the dark last year.
Spectators are invited to get
their eyes accustomed to the dim
light and explore the wonderful
world of owls and other creatures
of the night.
The journey will begin with a
slide talk at the workshop behind
the ABCA's administration office.
"Along the trail, we'll discuss
night-time creatures like rac-
coons, skunks, moths and hopeful-
ly we will hear the call of the
screech owl," says Hicks.
After the hike, hot chocolate will
be available to sip around an out-
door fireplace. Bring your own
mug to cut down on garbage.
Hikers and prowlers are remind-
ed to dress appropriately for being
outdoors.
If rain is imminent on Nov. 4,
call the ABCA at 235-2610 or 1
888-286-2610
for an update.
Nocturnal creatures —Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority (ABCA) conservation
education specialist Julie Hicks (holding a representative squirrel) and Grade 7 student Matt
Vincent from St. James School in Seaforth, look ready to take on the creatures of the night
during a conservation education program recently. They look with mock surprise at a
screech owl in a tree. The owl in this case is actually just a stuffed animal but families may
hear a real owl Nov. 4 when they are invited to the Night Hike and Owl Prowl at 7 p.m. at
Morrison Dam Conservation Area, just east of Exeter. (photo/submitted)
