(photo/Scott Nixon) Wind turbine proposal raises concerns By Scott Nixon TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF GRAND BEND — A number of concerns were raised at a public meeting last week to dis- cuss a proposal to erect a wind turbine generator at the Lake Huron Water Treatment Plant. The electricity generated by the wind turbine would be used by the water treatment plant. The 80 metre tall wind genera- tor tower would supply 16 per cent of the plant's electricity needs. At last Thursday's meeting at St. John's By the Lake Anglican Church in Grand Bend, Andrew Henry of the Lake Huron Primary Water Supply System said it's not yet determined if plans for the wind turbine will go ahead. A feasibility study is under way. Henry said things such as eco- nomics and obstacles are being looked at. A report will be sub- mitted in January, after which a decision on the turbine will be made. Dillon Consulting project man- ager George Wortman said the turbine would offset the elec- tricity the treatment plant has to draw from the grid. The fea- sibility study has seen wind data collected, as well as noise studies, visual assessments and studies to determine the affect the tower will have on birds in the area. He said reaction from the public has been varied, with some saying they are in favour, others saying they like the idea but not the location, with others showing serious concerns such as how property values will be affected and whether or not there will be health impacts caused by low frequency noise and vibration. The proposed wind turbine, a Vestas V82, is a 1.65 megawatt turbine with 41 metre long blades. The turbine would off- set about 5,916 megawatt hours per year, equivalent to the amount of electricity used by 550 homes. South Huron clerk and election returning officer Sandra Strang gave an update on the election at council's Monday night meeting. As South Huron uses the 'vote by mail' process, ballots were mailed to residents last week. A number of residents have already voted through the mail or by dropping their ballots off at the municipal office in Exeter. Monday was the first day ballots started to be processed at the municipal office — 221 ballots were processed, while 47 were rejected because they weren't com- pleted properly. The number of rejected ballots raised concerns from current coun- cillors and election candidates in the municipal chambers. Strang said she was "a little con- cerned" about the number of rejected ballots, but noted it is early in the process and there are over 8,300 eligible voters in South Huron — the 268 who had voted as of Monday represent a small per- centage of those who will ultimate- ly vote. Still, Strang said it is important to read the instructions that come with the ballots. Those still unsure how to vote can call the municipal office at 235-0310, watch the streaming video in the municipal office or on the South Huron web- site at www.town.southhuron.on.ca Voters should take the following steps: detach the declaration form and sign it, placing it in the yellow return envelope; complete the bal- lot and put it in the white secrecy envelope, then place the white See REJECTED page 2 EX c TER RYSLER "Your neighbourhood Chrysler Dealer" EVERY CARD'S A WINNER!
