Tomes looks to return to South Huron municipal politics

SOUTH HURON — While there has been much discus-
sion of the political newcomers running in
November's South Huron municipal election, a
council veteran has also stepped forward in the
Stephen ward.
Tom Tomes of Centralia has a plethora of expe-
rience in municipal politics, including three terms
as reeve of the former Stephen Township, two
terms as deputy reeve and one term as a council-
lor. He was also Huron County warden in 1993.
Tomes has been out of municipal politics since
amalgamation in 2000, but said he always stayed
interested. While he has missed politics, he still
has friends involved in council and says he thinks
having a few years away from council can be beneficial
because councillors sometimes develop "tunnel vision"
after too many years on council.
Tomes faces competition in the Stephen ward from
Vlado Bjelis, Jim Dietrich, Dianne Faubert and Crystal
Varley. The Stephen ward has two representatives on
South Huron council.
Tomes has followed the issues surrounding the
Crediton/Centralia sewer project, but says he didn't sit
on any of the committees that were formed. He says he
joined Stephen Township council in the late 1970s to
bring water to Centralia, something that happened in
both Centralia and Crediton in the early 1980s.
Tomes says he has never been opposed to
the sewer project, but he's not convinced of
the need for it — he says if a few houses with
septic problems had been condemned, the
sewage problem would probably be solved.
He adds council should have had a public
meeting on the sewer project and says the
public meetings that were held came out of
community committees that were formed.
Tomes adds the cost some property owners
will have to pay for the sewer project will be
"enormous."
Looking towards Huron Park, Tomes says
he is glad to see the residential side sold, but adds there
is still work to be done to see the rest of the industrial
side sold.
Tomes also says it is important for council to work
with Grand Coves Estates, which he says is "like its own
city."
Tomes also wants to ensure development in the
municipality is encouraged and not delayed.
He says the municipality has to move forward. "There
