"Breast Cancer Awareness Month
is an opportunity for us to get
women together and to encourage
them, and the men in their lives, to
be aware, be proactive, and get the
facts about breast heath," says
Janis Cunningham, manager of the
Canadian Cancer Society Huron -
Perth Unit.
The featured speakers of this edu-
cational event are cancer
researcher Ben Hedley and breast
cancer survivor Donna McTavish.
McTavish is president of the
Canadian Cancer Society's Huron -
Perth Unit, co -facilitator of the

Department of Medical Biophysics
at the University of Western
Ontario and the Cancer Research
Laboratory Program at the London
Regional Cancer Program. He will
present, "Breast Cancer Research:
Process, Knowledge, and
Translation." The focus of his
research is to analyze genes that
contribute, or inhibit, the spread of
breast cancer throughout the
human body.
Hedley has passion for his work:
"It's very personal for me. I've had
a family member die from breast
cancer. I find it challenging and
rewarding, and I may pursue a
career path as an oncologist," he
explained.
"We're excited about the event,"
says Cunningham. "We're hon-
oured to be able to bring Ben to
Clinton and Donna, well she's a
woman extraordinaire! When she
shares her story of breast cancer,
and how it changed her life, it's
really heartwarming and uplifting."

Off to the slammer —A `Jail and Bail' of local `celebrities last week raised $17,000 to be shared by Huron County Crime Stoppers and the Kidney Foundation of
Canada.Above, Crime Stoppers co-ordinator Shawn McFa11s leads South Huron District High School principal Jeff Reaburn off to jail, while right, McFa11s slaps the cuffs
on Exeter Dairy Queen owner Darren Kints. Reaburn was arrested for forgetting his homework for a board meeting and walking in the hall without a pass, while
Kints was charged with aiding and abetting speeding through the Dairy Queen drive-thru. SHDHS students sang the theme song from "Cops" as Reaburn was led in
handcuffs out of the school. He and Kints were taken to a jail in Suncoast Mall in Goderich where they had to gather pledges to be released. (photos/Scott Nixon)
