(photo/Pat Bolen) Breast Cancer Awareness Month event upcoming CLINTON — The Canadian Cancer Society is holding its Let's Get Together Breast Cancer Awareness Month event in Clinton Oct. 23. "Breast Cancer Awareness Month is an opportunity for us to get women together and to encourage them, and the men in their lives, to be aware, be proactive, and get the facts about breast heath," says Janis Cunningham, manager of the Canadian Cancer Society Huron - Perth Unit. The featured speakers of this edu- cational event are cancer researcher Ben Hedley and breast cancer survivor Donna McTavish. McTavish is president of the Canadian Cancer Society's Huron - Perth Unit, co -facilitator of the Society's Circle of Friends breast cancer support group and a Peer Support volunteer. Hedley is a PhD student in the Department of Medical Biophysics at the University of Western Ontario and the Cancer Research Laboratory Program at the London Regional Cancer Program. He will present, "Breast Cancer Research: Process, Knowledge, and Translation." The focus of his research is to analyze genes that contribute, or inhibit, the spread of breast cancer throughout the human body. Hedley has passion for his work: "It's very personal for me. I've had a family member die from breast cancer. I find it challenging and rewarding, and I may pursue a career path as an oncologist," he explained. "We're excited about the event," says Cunningham. "We're hon- oured to be able to bring Ben to Clinton and Donna, well she's a woman extraordinaire! When she shares her story of breast cancer, and how it changed her life, it's really heartwarming and uplifting." The Canadian Cancer Society Let's Get Together Breast Cancer Awareness Month event is Oct. 23, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Betty Cardno Centre (on highway 8) in Clinton. The event includes dessert and tea and coffee. Tickets are $5 and are available until Oct. 16. Tickets are not available at the door. Tickets can be bought in Exeter at Huron Apothecary; Clinton at New Orleans Pizza; Goderich at Scotiabank; Seaforth at Nifty Korners; Wingham at Christine's Clothes Closet; or by calling the Canadian Cancer Society at 271-4270 or 1-800-294-0086. Fifty- five members sat down to a bountiful supper at 6 p.m. Stu McLellan led in grace. President Shirley Kirk welcomed all and read "Thanksgiving Thoughts". Celebrating birthdays this month were Judy Laybourne, Madeline Sweitzer and Grace Ballantyne. Anniversary celebrants were Ery and Lois Armstrong and Gerald and Jane Dearing. Members were reminded of the Seniors Rally in Grand Bend Legion Oct. 19. Gerald Dearing gave a report of the Sept. 29 Euchreama at the legion. Jim Bearss reported on the upcoming senior activ- ities in the area. The group enjoyed his usual story. Christmas dinner tickets Next meeting is Nov. 7 when memberships and annual Christmas dinner tickets will be available. Membership is $5 and Christmas dinner tickets are $11. Christmas meals must be ordered by Nov. 26. A motion to have remembrances put in The Voice starting January 2007 was carried. Entertainment Sam Skinner was chair- person for the entertain- ment. He read the "Pat & Mike" story and "Indian Summer". Joyce Lavender read "Wild Friday Night In My House" and "An Old Farmers Advice." Door prize win- ners were Chris Phillips, Olga Davis, Wanda Reynolds, Mary Webber, Stu McLellan, Ruth Squires and Gerald Dearing. Share The Wealth winners were: Hedy Devine, Orville Webber, Audrey McDonald, Eldon Heywood, Dave Cottel, Shirley Kirk, Jim Bearss and Grace Ballantyne. Sam Skinner read "Coffee Shop", "Retirement Home" and "The Blonde Lady." The entertainment for the evening was Bob Heywood. He favoured everyone with great gospel and toe -tapping music. The seniors enjoyed his humour and his poem on "Rabbi Be Gone". Sam thanked Bob and gave a gift of appreci- ation. Shirley Kirk ended the program with two sto- ries and the meeting closed with "The Seniors Prayer." Exeter Bridge Above average scores for Oct. 4 - Pamela and James Rabb .680, Rosaleen Berends and Lorraine Alexander .500 Off to the slammer —A `Jail and Bail' of local `celebrities last week raised $17,000 to be shared by Huron County Crime Stoppers and the Kidney Foundation of Canada.Above, Crime Stoppers co-ordinator Shawn McFa11s leads South Huron District High School principal Jeff Reaburn off to jail, while right, McFa11s slaps the cuffs on Exeter Dairy Queen owner Darren Kints. Reaburn was arrested for forgetting his homework for a board meeting and walking in the hall without a pass, while Kints was charged with aiding and abetting speeding through the Dairy Queen drive-thru. SHDHS students sang the theme song from "Cops" as Reaburn was led in handcuffs out of the school. He and Kints were taken to a jail in Suncoast Mall in Goderich where they had to gather pledges to be released. (photos/Scott Nixon)
