Exeter finished tied for fourth and the players enjoyed the season and felt they could have won every game, said team spokesperson John Muller. Most of the games this year were of the 2-1, 1-0 or 1-1 variety. The last game of the year against the Irish Canadians was uncharacteristic of the Masters with a normally strong defence falling behind 3-1 by the half. But with a never -say -die offence the team came back to win 5-4. Goals came from Ian Chisholm with two, Peter Hakvoort, Trevor McGregor and Doug Brunton. It was a well played game from the midfield by Charlie Wise, Magregor and Chisholm. Exeter's strength during the season was its defence holding the opposition to 20 goals which was a goal -per -game average. The Masters were led by goalie Colin Coburn and centre back Ron Reymer who were supported by Scott Davidson, Alex Kollias, Dick Lord and John Muller. Exeter's midfield excelled in ball control led by Wise, Chisholm, McGregor, Mike Flanagan, Shawn Tucker, Brian Westlaken and Hubert Haccius. The Master's offence scored 40 goals during the season, a respectable number considering Exeter didn't capitalize on all its chances. The Masters were led by Tony Van Mierlo's 10 goals and Hakvoort's six. Others helping on the for- ward line were Dale Regier, Matt Muller, Hilman Kaumans and Brunton. The players thank coach Bill Smith who played one game at the age of 82. Davidson, with the help of past manager Lord did an excellent job of running the day-to-day opera- tions of the team, said Muller, who added thanks also go to Dale Regier and Hilman Kaumans for hosting the mid and final team parties. Joe Laurie's retirement last year and Tony Vandenheuvel's injury didn't deter them from being the team's number one supporters. The game of soccer is supposed to be competitive and fun and judging by the weekly turnout and the players' comments it was a successful year, said Muller. Junior Girls win EXETER - The South Huron District High School junior girls basketball team played a superb game against St. Mike's in Stratford Oct. 4, said coach Terry O'Rourke, particularly in the second half and came away with a 33-31 win. It was the first time South Huron has defeated St. Mike's in quite a while. South Huron played hard-nosed defence as well as protecting the basketball. All players contributed positively to the victory, said O'Rourke. Mairead O'Rourke had 11 points followed by Julie Roberts and Kacie Erb with eight points each. Melanie Smith added four points and Marlee Baehnisch added nine rebounds and five steals. It was a well deserved victory, said O'Rourke.
