SH REC CENTRE Public hears study details By Scott Nixon TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF EXETER — A meeting last week provid- ed the public with more information on an upcoming study of South Huron's business community. The `Business Retention and Expansion Program,' a year-long program, has been done in communities across the province and is designed to identify the needs and problems of local businesses and help them expand and thrive. In South Huron, the project has been labelled the `South Huron Alliance for Retention and Expansion' (SHARE). Nearby communities such as Seaforth and Goderich are also undertak- ing such projects. Once underway, volunteer interviewers will survey local businesses, discovering what problems they face. From there, a task force (consisting of local experts in agriculture, retail, industry and tourism) will study the surveys, with a strategic plan developed to improve the local economy. South Huron Chamber of Commerce pres- ident Hugh McMaster, who spearheaded the project, said the project will involve ongoing co-operation from local businesses, government, agencies and the public. "People are the key," McMaster said, adding the study aims to help local busi- nesses survive and grow. "We know we have competition to the south, big time," he said, but added South Huron needs to try to reverse the trend and look at attracting Londoners here to shop. "We have some very unique things in South Huron," he said. Partners in the project include the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA), the municipality of South Huron, Huron County, the Huron Business Development Corporation, the Exeter Business Association, the Centre for Employment and Learning and the South Huron Chamber of Commerce. In addition to helping make local busi- nesses more competitive, one of the pro- ject's goals is to help businesses retain the jobs they have and create new jobs. McMaster also hopes one of the outcomes of the study will be the creation of opportu- nities for local youth. The surveys, he said, will serve as a report card on the local economy. From there, solutions will be sought to correct the problems.
