Fury end
season
EXETER — The Exeter Fury
ended their season on a sour
note with a pair of losses in
London this week.
Tuesday night against London
City the Fury were defeated 1-0
in a tight battle.
The winning goal came late in
the second half while City
were down to 10 men due to a
red card given to one of its
players.
The first half saw most of the
action played in the middle of
the field with neither team get-
ting many scoring chances.
The best chance for the Fury
occurred when Matt Strano
was robbed on a diving save by
the City keeper.
Tim Hundey attempted to set
up another strike when he sent
a ball out of mid-air into the
middle of the field but Exeter
failed to capitalize.
Exeter keeper Andreas
Hobyan kept the Fury in the
game in the second half and
sweeper Ryan Ralph did an
excellent job intercepting pass-
es and moving the ball up the
field.
The Fury headed into
Sunday's game against
Marconi at the Windermere
field knowing they were the
bottom two teams in Second
Division and were headed for
Third Division next year.
The Fury didn't play their
best game in a 5-1 loss against
a tough Marconi squad but
were victimized by some unfor-
tunate bounces in the first half
to fall behind 3-0 quickly.
Matt Strano replied for
Exeter with his third goal of
the season on a long blast
under the bar to make it 3-1 at
the half.
Exeter battled hard the sec-
ond half and had some oppor-
tunities but was turned away
each time by the Marconi
defense.
Ryan Hern showed some
magic with some fancy foot-
work to create open space and
then a cross through the box
that was unable to be finished
off for a shot on goal.
The final whistle brought
Hern's Fury career to an end
after 12 years.
The Fury all-time leader in
games played heads into retire-
ment having played every posi-
tion over the years including
goalkeeper.
Ryan, along with his brother
Craig, was the true heart of the
team over the years and will
be missed.
"There will be some changes
next year in terms of players
but we will have some fun in
Third," said Fury spokesperson
Jason McFalls.
"Ryan Hern was an excellent
teammate and his dedication
and support of the Exeter Fury
was greatly appreciated and
we will miss having him on the
team," McFalls added.
