SH candidates
continue to file

SOUTH HURON — The number of South Huron can-
didates for this fall's municipal election continues to
grow.
Two more political newcomers, Usborne's David
Frayne and Exeter's Leroy Hoffman, have filed their
nomination papers, while council veteran Jim Dietrich
is seeking re-election.
Jim Dietrich
Current Stephen ward Coun. Dietrich recently filed
his nomination papers for re-election. He said he
wants to finish off the projects South Huron is working
on, such as the Crediton/Centralia sewer project and
the new Exeter water project. He admits he wasn't
sure if he was going to run again,
but made the decision a couple of
weeks ago.
Dietrich said the biggest project in
his ward is the sewer project. He
said he thinks there's no choice but
to go ahead with the project, but
voting for it was the toughest deci-
sion he had to make. He said he's
hoping a government grant can help
with the project.
"It's a big decision for me to spend
someone else's money," he explains.
Another big issue in Stephen is the ongoing privati-
zation of Huron Park. Dietrich is pleased with the sale
of the residential side and the beginning of the sale of
some of the industrial properties. He said he hopes the
rest of the properties will be sold.
"I think it's great," Dietrich says of the privatization.
"It's nice to see it get privatized."
Dietrich said privatization will result in the park run-
ning more efficiently and he said the owners will be
happy because they can control their future.
Dietrich would also like to see plans go ahead to ren-
ovate the former Stephen Township municipal offices
into a new community centre for Crediton. He said the
centre would have a kitchen and a capacity for 160
people and it's an issue the next council will look at.
Dietrich said he wants to be a voice for all residents,
not just rural residents.
As for the Hensall ethanol plant, Dietrich said it's a
great thing for the area and will help local farmers
and create spinoff jobs.
Dietrich has lived in the former Stephen Township
north of Shipka his entire life. He and his wife Linda
have two grown children and one grandchild.
Dietrich farms and works at Exeter Produce.
Running against him so far in Stephen are Crystal
Varley, Tom Tomes and Vlado Bjelis.

Strong math results in EQAO tests
By Stew Slater
SPECIAL TO THE TIMES -ADVOCATE
SEAFORTH — The Avon Maitland
District School Board is once again
among the province's leaders when
it comes to success rates in the
standardized Grade 9 Math test —
including keeping pace with the
Education Ministry's efforts to boost
province -wide success among
Applied -level students.
But recently -released results from
the Education Quality and
Accountability Office (EQAO) reveal
the opposite trend in Reading
among students in Grades 3 and 6,
and in Writing among Grade 3 stu-
dents.
Board -wide success rates in all
three disciplines decreased for the
Avon Maitland board in 2006, com-
pared to the previous year. And the
board now sits below the provincial
average in Grade 3 and 6 Reading,
and Grade 6 Writing.
Counterparts in the district's
Catholic system, meanwhile, once
again put their board at or near the
top of the province in all three
grades.
Across Ontario, average success
rates in all eight disciplines —
Grade 3 and 6 Reading, Writing
and Math; and Applied -level and
Academic -level Grade 9 Math —
increased in 2006. Most increased
by one, two or three per cent, while
the average success rate in
Applied -level Grade 9 Math jumped
eight per cent.
That still, however, means only
35 per cent of the province's
Applied -level Grade 9 students
passed the test.
The Applied -level standardized
test has been the topic of much dis-
cussion for several years, and
efforts continue to build success
rates.
In Huron and Perth counties,
meanwhile, Grade 9 success rates
have been consistently higher than
the provincial average. In 2006, 79
per cent of Academic -level Avon
Maitland students passed the test,
along with 53 per cent of Applied -
level students.
Both are improvements over the
previous year.
In the Huron -Perth Catholic
District School Board, 71 per cent
