SHDHS open house tonight EXETER — Last Friday we sent home with Grade 9 and 10 stu- dents our first newsletter of the year. Among the items listed in the newsletter is a reminder of our open house tonight (Wednesday), from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Hopefully, most of the newsletters arrived home. We look forward to a good turn -out of parents, especially parents of Grade 9 students. The format will be informal, as this evening is intended simply to allow parents to meet their sons' or daughters' teachers and see where they have their classes. Teachers will be located in their classrooms and teacher lists and maps of the school will be provid- ed. Also mentioned in the newsletter is our Character Education program, in which we will focus on one character attribute for each of the 10 months of the school year. The attributes were deter- mined by our school board, the Avon Maitland District School Board, through a series of public consultation meet- ings last year. The attributes are listed on posters that will be dis- played throughout the school, including a large one in the main hallway outside the school office. Last year I met with the princi- pals of the feeder schools for South Huron and we decided upon an order in which we would present the traits, starting with "Respect" for the month of September and "Responsibility" in October. To kick off our character education pro- gram, we have invited Mike Neuts to visit each of the South Huron area schools Oct. 3 - 4, with a pre- sentation for parents in the evening on Oct. 3. Mike's son, Myles, died after a bullying inci- dent in which he was suspended from a coat hook in an elementary school bathroom. After his son's death, Mike and his wife have gone on their own personal crusade advocating for the safety of chil- dren throughout Canada and deliv- ering a powerful message about bullying and the need for respect. We invite and encourage parents and community members to attend the evening ses- most of the same information on our school website: www.amdsb.ca/SHDHS/current/ so that parents and students can have access to the information from their home computers. Keeping parents informed is important to us, but teenagers are not always good at taking informa- tion home; so, we make informa- tion available in a variety of ways. In addition to the first newsletter, which went out last Friday, we usually distribute one with report cards. This column and one by the Students' Council public relations person usually contain information about events at the school and appear in the local papers most weeks during the school year. The sign in front of the school usually promotes one of our upcoming events, and our school website provides a great deal of information, including information from the planner, upcoming events, Guidance Department information and highlights of School Council activities, including a list of our community forums. Parents and students will also find on our website e-mail links to all of our staff so you may contact them when necessary. And, of course, you can always phone us. We value parental input and will happily provide any information parents need to assist their chil- dren in being successful in school. We encourage you to stay in regu- lar contact with us. JEFF REABU PRINCIPA MESSAGE sion in the large gym at SHDHS to hear Mike's message. The open house, the Mike Neuts presenta- tion and several other important school events are listed in the student plan- ners that were distributed to each student on the first day of school. We encourage par- ents to check out the student planners, but just in case you don't get a chance to, we have put togeth- er a Parent Handbook con- taining some of the key infor- mation. These handbooks will be available at the open house and after that, by request in the office.
