Canada's `Singing cowboy' dies
BRUSSELS — "Canada's Number -One
Singing Cowboy" has died at 89.
Singer and announcer Earl
Heywood, born in the former
Usborne Township on the Welsh
Farm at Lot 12. Con. 2, died Sunday
at Huronlea in Brussels.
A well-known entertainer who
composed over 350 songs including
his signature song, "Moonlight on
the Manitoulin Island," Heywood
joined CKNX in 1942 and remained
there as a singer and announcer for Earl
over 35 years. Heywood appeared Heywood
on the weekly "CKNX Barn Dance"
for nearly 20 years and hosted "Serenade Wingham.
Ranch" from 1946 to 1953. He toured and
recorded with the Heywood
Family and, with his wife Martha,
helped form the Barn Dance
Historical Society.
In his youth, Heywood played
and sang with Fred Variety enter-
tainers Sunday nights at the Grand
Bend Casino. There were many
nights of singing and music with
entertainer Gordie Tapp, a cousin
of the Heywoods.
Heywood's funeral was today
(Wednesday) at 1:30 p.m. at St.
Andrew's Presbyterian Church in

POLICE BRIEF
Dog attack in Exeter
EXETER — On Sept. 16, Huron OPP were advised of
a dog attack that had taken place in Exeter. It was
reported that the victim's dog a three-year-old Jack
Russell Terrier was attacked and bitten by a German
Sheppard. The owner of the shepherd is responsible
for the vet bills and was issued a charge under the
dog owners liability act.
