Usborne has great year
USBORNE — The soft-
ball season recently
ended for the 10 teams
of the Usborne Minor
Ball League at the
Kirkton Community.
Each child took home a
door prize they selected
from the array of donat-
ed gifts brought in that
night.
Often in the past there
has been a baseball
game following the
indoor festivities but due
to the inclement weather
that night the game was
cancelled.
There were 126 chil-
dren from the ages of
three to 16 registered
this year with an even
mix of boys and girls
teams.
The Thames Road and
Kirkton diamonds were
busy most nights during
the week with practices
and 67 minor games
were played out of the
Kirkton Ball Park in
2006.
The park also hosted
the Tyke and Pee Wee
Girls tournaments.
The Kirkton Facilities
are top notch with two
diamonds, an active food
booth, pavilion, a shaded
playground and a heated
pool all on the same
grounds.
The people of Kirkton
should be proud as many
other softball centers
envy the facilities.
It does take a commu-
nity to raise a child and
that shows with the com-
munity support given to
Usborne Minor Ball.
The organization, with
the help of the Kirkton
Woodham Optimist, the
Kirkton Winter Carnival
and the Exeter Men's
Slowpitch League were
able to purchase three
teams' worth of new uni-
forms for the kids this
year.
Several helmets, bats
and catcher's equipment
for each team were also
able to be replaced.
Although not everyone
agreed with their calls,
the umpires that came to
Kirkton did a great job.
Adult and local youth
have stepped up to the
plate to develop their
umpiring skills and
should be recognized for
their professional con-
duct.
Umpiring can be both a
financially rewarding
and character building
job of baseball.
The umpire pool has
been shrinking each year
and could be the soul
reason for the collapsing
of minor ball in other
centers.
Ball games can't be
played without umpires
and people to need to
get involved if they want
to see softball thrive in
the area.
Let's hope the 2007
season of Usborne Minor
Ball is even more excit-
ing then the successful
2006 season.
