They played St. Anne's from Clinton and though the Panthers dominated the play, they lost 1-0. In the next game, Goderich defeat- ed St. Anne's 4-0. South Huron played Goderich in the third game and were a much changed team, said coach Jim Workman. South Huron played with determi- nation and enthusiam, defeating the Vikings 2-0 with Lindsay Mills scor- ing both goals. On Saturday, the team travelled to Waterloo to play in their tourna- ment and had a positive experience, according to Workman. In the first game, they played Elmira and easily defeated them 6- 0. Staci Miller opened the scoring just after eight minutes and added a second assisted by Kristen Ferguson. At the 19 -minute mark, Kelly Cronyn scored a solo and Miller scored her hat -trick three minutes later. Lauren Haberer scored one minute later, assisted by rookie Megan Pavkeje. Two minutes before the final whistle, Pavkeje scored her first of the season, assisted by Ferguson. Kaitlin Hakvoort recorded the shutout. In the second game, St. John Kilmarnock and the Panthers played an end-to-end game with SJK winning 1-0. The third game produced no goals as the game with Nelson from Burlington ended in a 0-0 tie. The Panthers should have have won this game said Workman, but they lost their scoring touch and could not force the win. In the final game, the touch came back as the team defeated Jacob Hespeler, from Cambridge 3-0. South Huron opened the scoring after 10 minutes when Cronyn played a long ball towards the net. It resulted in Miller placing a strong shot on net and Mills played the rebound into the net. Three minutes later, Miller scored assisted by rookie Ashley Denomme and Ferguson. Two minutes from the final whis- tle, Pavkeje slotted in the rebound from a Cronyn shot. The team has the week off from league play, but play in the SJK Invitational where the competition will be SJK, Waterloo -Oxford and Notre Dame. Workman said this will be a great opportunity to play three of the top teams in Ontario. "We started playing better as a team and started implementing some of the things we're going to be all about this year." Howard said officiating in the games remains consis- tent as the league tries to enforce tougher rules against obstruction. "It made for a lot of spe- cial team play again...our penalty kill, I thought was really great. Howard said the Hawks only allowed six goals over the weekend. "That's going to win you a lot of games most week- ends." Playing well between the pipes for the Hawks during the tournament was Steve Osgood, whom Howard said allowed only three goals in two games. Leading the team as cap- tain this season will be Jason Stuckless with assis- tants Darcy McCutcheon, Jeff Smale and Craig Masse. With the Hawks emphaz- ing offence this year, Howard said the players will be given a lot of room for creativity within a basic structure. "We want an aggresssive system," said Howard. "There is lots of room for defencemen to join in the offence this year...there will be more green lighting from the coaching staff to join in the rush." With more penalties being called in the exhibition games, Howard said there hasn't been as much chance for the coaches to look at the team overall, but it has given some players the chance to stand out on the penalty kill. The Hawks have a pair of games this weekend with West Lorne in town Friday night at 8:30 p.m. The Hawks visit North Middlesex Sunday night at 8 p.m. The team is also looking for a trainer and anyone interested can contact coach Art Larivee at 345- 9922.
