New website provides information about Old Ausable Channel
EXETER — The Old Ausable
Channel message is now
reaching watershed residents
in a new way.
The Ausable Bayfield
Conservation Authority
(ABCA), a local volunteer web
designer and funding partners
have worked together to
unveil a new website to inform
the community of news relat-
ed to the valuable but fragile
local ecosystem.
The website, www. oldaus-
ablechannel.ca, was initiated
as part of the Old Ausable
Channel Management Strategy
and is officially up and run-
ning this month.
The new website features
information on upcoming
events, volunteer opportuni-
ties, records of OAC strategy
developments and colourful
photos of the scenic body of
water.
Visitors will also find infor-
mation on the unique aquatic
and terrestrial features of the
Old Ausable Channel.
Questions and comments can
be e-mailed to info@oldaus-
ablechannel.ca via the new
website.
"The new website is
extremely attractive and is an
around-the-clock way of keep-
ing local volunteers and inter-
ested watershed residents
aware of this important body
of water," said Kari Killins, co-
ordinator of the Old Ausable
Channel Management
Strategy.
"We appreciate the tireless
efforts of local volunteer Barb
Ferris to give us a distinctive,
eye-catching and user-friendly
way of getting the message
out in words and images."
Ferris has volunteered her
expertise in designing other
web pages, such as the
Friends of the Pinery and the
Ausable Bird Observatory.
She lives along the Old
Ausable Channel and has a
keen interest in the environ-
ment and the species within
the channel watershed. Ferris
says she hopes "the website
will promote the Friends of
the Old Ausable Channel
group and provide a place for
people to look for more infor-
mation about the Old
Channel."
The OAC Strategy is a joint
effort to maintain this impor-
tant and distinctive ecosystem
by the ABCA and funding part-
ners including: the Ausable
Bayfield Conservation
Foundation, the Grand Bend
Community Foundation and
the Government of Canada's
Habitat Stewardship Program.
The Old Ausable Channel
was part of the original
Ausable River until two diver-
sions at the end of the 19th
century separated this body of
water from the current
Ausable River which flows into
Lake Huron. The channel —
which runs through Pinery
Provincial Park and now car-
ries only local drainage —
may be evolving from a river -
like ecosystem to a pond -like
ecosystem.
The river is an important
habitat for many Species at
Risk and is in need of protec-
tion. It is also home to many
residents and provides valu-
able recreation opportuni-
ties such as canoeing and
fishing.
In addition to the ABCA's
creation of this new web -
based communications
effort, the ABCA is also
inviting watershed resi-
dents to become members
of a new Friends of the Old
Ausable Channel group to
take part in community
clean-ups, information
nights and other events.
The group's first event is
an Old Ausable Channel
Clean-up Day Sat., Sept.
30 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Interested volunteers can
meet at the Huron Woods
Clubhouse or Southcott
Pines Clubhouse.
Appropriate clothing such
as pants, long sleeve shirts
are recommended.
Necessary cleaning equip-
ment will be provided
(gloves, garbage bags,
etc.).
A free thank -you barbe-
cue lunch is scheduled to
follow for clean-up partici-
pants. The event is part of
the Great Canadian
Shoreline Clean-up this
September.
If you are interested in
taking part in the clean-
up, or becoming a member
of Friends of the Old
Ausable Channel, call Kari
Killins at 519-235-2610, or
toll-free 1-888-286-2610,
or e-mail
kkillins@abca. on. ca to
have information on group
events sent to you.
