(photo/submitted) GRAND BEND — On Sept. 23, the Huron Country Playhouse will welcome an odd but charming assortment of characters right out of the 1960s. No, they're not actors. The `flower children,' some 24 of them, are the handiwork of a number of women who have been getting together once a week for the past three months to create a colourful and authentic '60s setting for the Grand Bend Rotary Club's third annual Autumn Indulgence. Originally known as `straw people,' they were the idea of Mardelle Hunt, Mary Margaret Prowse and Jacqui Krech, all spouses of Rotary Club members, who were look- ing to create a unique ambience for last year's Autumn Indulgence. "It was trial and error and a lot of laughter before we could get something that would stand up or sit up," says Krech. They finally came up with a solution that involved plastic -covered cardboard pop contain- ers, coat -hangers, straw, styrofoam, burlap and lots of plastic bags. To create this year's flower children, the women undressed the straw people from last year and created some new ones from scratch. For clothing, they grate- fully accepted contribu- tions from Arc Angels Thrift Shop in Dashwood. The women looked for bright, psychedelic colours, to which they added '60s motifs such as flowers and peace sym- bols. "We get really excited with the clothing," says Krech. "You'd think we had just gone to the Best Bridal Salon. Instead, we're digging through Certificates to be presented Sept. 24 By Joan Beierling VARNA CORRESPONDENT VARNA - Church was in Varna on Sunday and Pastor Elly Van Bergen welcomed folks back from summer vacation including Anson and Evelyn McKinley who were back for the day. Birthday wishes were also extended to Jen Keys, Marg Hayter and Herb Beierling. Anniversary wishes were extended to Debbie and Don Rathwell. Congrats to Scott and Kelli Rathwell on the birth of their daughter. The Gift Of Music was the Choirs Anthem "Whispering Hope" which tied in well with Pastor Van Bergen's words about '9-11 Remembered' - "hope with a gentle persua- sion whispers her comforting word." We must strive to the goodness of humanity that came out of such tragedy. Church service will be in Goshen next Sun., Sept. 17 and in Goshen on Sept. 24 with Joyce Dowson leading the worship and also the presenta- tion of Sunday School seals and cer- tificates. With a number of straw people already on hand, the women were able to spend more time this year improving their features and giving them different characteristics. "We pay a lot of atten- tion to the details," says Krech. "One of the gals has a bunch of wigs that we cut up and use. And we have a lot of fun with buttons because they make such great eyes." After a while, their cre- ations begin to take on real personalities, she says. Among her favourites are the Blues Brothers, Twiggy, the beach boys, `Meathead,' and the hippy. She also loves the 'big daddy,' who is wearing a white sports coat and a pink carna- tion, just like in the song. Although she'll miss her flower children when they leave her basement, Krech is looking forward to seeing them on display at Autumn Indulgence. Some of them will be sit- ting in the restored '65 Thunderbird that's the pride and joy of her hus- band, Hank. "We had great fun doing this," she says. "What I enjoyed most was the cre- ativity of the people I was working with." Rounding out the cre- ative team were Jackie Southcott, Pat Thacker and Liz Putherbough. Autumn Indulgence takes place at Huron Country Playhouse Sept. 23.
