Missing seven players due to work and other commit- ments the Fury did their best to give the home squad a tough battle. St. Thomas jumped out to an early lead when a long throw-in to the middle of the crease was eventually headed across the line. The Fury had newly signed keeper Andreas Hobyan dressed for his first action this season and he showed a little rust on a long shot that found the top corner to give St. Thomas a 2-0 lead. The Fury started to create some opportunities later in the half but failed to get a shot on goal on three separate occasions. The home team continued to break through the Fury defence by using quick passes and then solid through balls which resulted in excellent chances. The goal that made it 3-0 was the result of a breakaway from one of those passes. The Fury played a stronger second half and displayed more of a willingness to fight for the ball. Call-ups Joe Forrester and Tony VanMierlo put in hard-working efforts for the Fury and while a few guys played out of position Exeter fought hard until the end. Hobyan made some aggressive stops to keep the goals against down but it wasn't enough to save the game for the Fury. Tom Pouttharath converted a penalty shot after Darren Marziali was hauled down in the box which made the score 4-1 but St. Thomas added a late goal to make the final score 5-1. "The guys did their best out there under difficult cir- cumstances and stayed positive which is an important part of the game," team spokesperson Jason McFalls stated. The Fury is off for the Labour Day weekend and next play Sept. 10 at home against Benfica in a must -win game for the Fury if they hope to avoid relegation at season's end.
