Losses and new beginnings

GRANTON – The
Granton community
shares the loss of a long-
time Granton resident,
Elsie Dann Jones, who
passed away Sunday
morning, August 27, hav-
ing suffered a stroke a few
weeks ago.
At the Granton -Wesley
United Church on Sun.,
Aug. 27, Mary Waters lit
the Christ Candle. Pastor
Paul Vollick led the service
and the message was enti-
tled "It's a hard road." The
lessons were from John 6
and Ephesians 6.
The ministry of music
was a piano solo by Shirley
Mullenix entitled "Mansion
Over the Hilltop."
On Sun., Sept. 10, Unit
One will host the muffin
social before the service.
At St. Paul's Anglican
Church in Kirkton on Sun.,
Aug. 27 Rev. Dalice Sim
celebrated the Holy
Eucharist. The message
was about letting God's
Holy Spirit be a guide in
times of need. Bill
Schaefer read the lessons.
Congratulations to Jaden
and Carolyn (Bryan) Ropp
of St. Marys on the birth of
their baby daughter Anna
Pearl on Sat., July 29.

Worship services resume in Varna on Sunday

VARNA – Last Thursday 40 ladies of the Varna U.C.W.
and community ladies as well as family and friends trav-
eled to Blyth and enjoyed a delicious supper at the Blyth
United Church. Deb Rathwell
welcomed all and hoped every-
one enjoyed a good summer. Deb
thanked Mona Stephenson and Sjoujke for all their hard
work planning and getting the meal and theatre tickets
arranged. Following the delicious dinner Leisa
Stephenson thanked the ladies for the wonderful meal.
Deb thanked all those that collected for gifts for three
weddings in the community and also made mention that
collecting is still being done for Kat Van Bergen (daugh-
ter of Elly Van Bergen) and anyone wanting to donate
should drop it off at the Corner Store in Varna.
Sjoujke Steenbeek was thanked for taking charge of
the cookies for Vacation Bible School. Thanks also to
Elly for arranging the Mystery Tour on Aug. 11. Thank
yous were read from Bob Stephenson and Deb Sinclair,
Doris Wilson, Carol Pakenham and Brenda Consitt.
Bernice Reid, Marg Hayter, Ruth Johnston, Ruby Hill,
Lynda Hill, Joan Beierling, Barb Consitt, Sjoujke
Steenbeek, Colleen Faulds, Janice Prescator and Donna
Smale all had August birthdays and were extended
birthday wishes. Bernice Reid had the birthday closest
to the date and will pick up her gift at the Corner store
in Varna.
A reminder to everyone to mark their Calendars for

The Stanley Township Mixed Soft
Ball team playing in the Tri - County
League fmished off in their tourna-
ment last weekend as true winners.
This team never lost a game all sea-
son and won three straight games to
win the A Championship. Way to go
team. The coaches of this team are
Jack de Groot and Dave Cooper .

POLICE BRIEF
Police arrest one male after citizen call
BLUEWATER — Huron OPP received a call facing one count of assault.
from a concerned citizen Aug. 18
regarding a domestic assault at a res-
idence in Bayfield. Police attended,
finding a female victim had been
assaulted by a male party. The par-
ties had been involved in a heated
discussion that escalated to physical
violence against the victim. A 50 -
year -old male resident of Seaforth
will attend Goderich Provincial Court,
