Savage a superstar in "The Mikado"
By Nina Van Lieshout
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
GRAND BEND — "The
Mikado," a Gilbert and
Sullivan comic operetta, is
wrapping up this year's
successful 2006 season at
the Huron Country
Playhouse.
The opening perfor-
mance Aug. 17 brought
out several familiar faces
along with a guest of hon-
our, Minister of Tourism
Jim Bradley who
announced $10,000 in
funding for the
"Shakespeare to the
Shoreline" project, aiming
to enhance self -guided dri-
ving tours for Ontarians.
The operetta, set in the
Orient is influenced by the
Japanese culture as well
as pokes fun of the high
English society in the
Victorian era.
The characters in the
play often incorporate
modern day items and
issues.
There was even a refer -

After Keith Savage's
much anticipated entrance
which left the crowd hoot-
ing, hollering and
applauding, Savage play-
ing Ko -Ko, the Lord High
Executioner of Titipu pulls
out a list of people, many
modern day that he
would like to execute.
Among the list are peo-
ple who smoke in public
places, drivers who ride
on people's bumpers and
Canadian idols.
After referring to
Canadian idols, the back-
ground Noblemen break
out in modern day dance
moves, found throughout
the course of the show and
use their fans as micro-
phones mimicking the
idols.
After that first scene
with Savage it is obvious
he is the star of the show.
Whether through a par-
ticular exaggerated facial
expression or exaggerated
dance moves, he is hilari-
ous.
All actors in this operetta
are to be commended but
it's Savage, the well
deserved recipient of the
2006 Terry Doyle award,
who carries the play until
the curtain falls.
This performance direct-
ed by Alex Mustakas is
very well done.
The choreography is top
notch as well as the music,
minus a couple of scenes
which are difficult to
understand at times.
Christopher Wilson was
an excellent choice for
Poo -Bah, a man of many
skills.
"The Mikado" is a hilari-
ous musical based around
a love story in which
Nanki-Poo, a social out-
cast, falls in love with
Yum -Yum, a young maid-
en set to marry Savage
who is her guardian.
However, through sever-
al silly antics things quick-
ly change and Savage ends
up in quite a comedic situ-
ation with Katisha played
by Rebecca Poff.
