Steckle wants EI premiums
eliminated for off -farm
ZURICH - Huron -Bruce M.P. and associate critic for agri-
culture Paul Steckle in anticipation of the upcoming National
Liberal Caucus meeting in Vancouver, announced recently his
plan to call upon Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the
Minister responsible for Employment Insurance (E.I.) to elimi-
nate all premiums on off -farm income.
Steckle stated in a news release, "Our primary producers
are currently facing their greatest financial crisis since the
1980's and, while government can't alone overcome every
hurdle facing the industry, we must offer farmers whatever
help and support that we can.
On this front, I am today asking for the government to
remove the requirement to pay E.I. premiums on off -farm
income when earned by an individual engaged in the business
of farming.
These individuals cannot, generally speaking, collect from
the plan because of their farming activities.
This, despite the fact that most are working off -farm to help
make ends meet on the farm.
Many years ago, a farmer told me that he worked on the
farm to feed his country and off of his farm to feed his family.
Those words were never truer than they are today and we
must recognize that reality and stop penalizing hard working
Canadians."
Steckle added, "it is my intention to draft a letter to every
Member of the House of Commons and the Senate to ask for
their personal support for Canadian farmers.
I would hope that their support will manifest in the form of
an endorsement of this proposal.
I will then seek leave to formally table those endorsements in
the House of Commons.
I have every confidence that, with solid support in the House
and Senate and, given his past positions on such matters, the
Prime Minister will subsequently act swiftly to put an end to
E.I. premiums on off -farm income when earned by an individ-
ual engaged in the business of farming."
