EXETER — The Exeter
Fury suffered a heart-
breaking loss in the last
minute Sunday night
against the second place
Curinga squad from
London.
The last 15 minutes of
the game Exeter was
hanging on for the tie but
failed to clear the ball
down the field to kill the
remaining time.
After turning the ball
over Curinga managed to
cross the ball into the mid-
dle.
The striker blasted a
shot out of the air and into
the top corner of the net
to the dismay of the Fury
players who played their
best game of the season
against a tough opponent.
The Fury worked their
game plan the whole 90
minutes by playing in a
defensive shell and pres-
suring the ball all over the
field.
Curinga managed to get
a goal in the first half on a
header that was nearly
stopped but deflected into
the corner of the net.
The Fury continued hus-
tling to try to create
turnovers and when Tim
Hundey was fouled near
the sideline Ryan Ralph
curled a free kick into the
box.
Ben Willis -Leake tried
for the header and missed
but Tom Phouttharath
was waiting in behind and
fired a shot past the keep-
er to tie the game and give
the Fury some momen-
tum.
During the middle stages
of the second half Curinga
started to gain more scor-
ing chances but on multi-
ple occasions fired the ball
wide or over the net.
Exeter's defense and
keeper held strong though
and cleared the ball away
at any opportunity.
Late in the game the
Fury nearly cost them-
selves the game when
Fury defender Shawn
McFalls came flying
through the box and
headed a loose ball just
wide of the Fury goalpost.
Curinga kept Exeter in
their end the last few min-
utes and the pressure
finally paid off with the
goal just before fulltime.
"We played our best
game as a team this sea-
son," said team
spokesperson Jason
McFalls.
"Every guy on the team
made a contribution and if
we play that way the rest
of the season we should
pick up a few wins,"
McFalls added.
The next action for the
Fury is Saturday in St.
Thomas.

Lucan Pigeon Racing Club results
LUCAN — The
Lucan Homing
Pigeon Club recently
started their young
bird racing pro-
gram.
Young birds are
those pigeons born
on or after Jan. 1,
2006.
Exeter fancier
Harry Winters had a
"young bird in a
hurry," which
together with 136
other pigeons, was
released in
Brampton at 8 a.m.
and Winters clocked
it in at 9:49 a.m.
This bird flew back
to its homeloft at an
average speed of
1,335 meters per
minute or 80 kilo-
metres per hour,
good for first place.
The next few of
Winters' birds took
positions 10 and 11.
Lucan's Norm
Hardy had good
birds that placed
second and sixth
while local flyer Al
de Haan took posi-
tions three, five and
14.
Mr. Cunningham
had a bird that
placed fourth and
Paul Finch from
downtown Walton
claimed positions
six, eight and nine.
Tom Hardy had to
be satisfied with
positions 15 and 16
and newcomer Fred
Hally claimed the
last spot.
The same day a
longer race was held
from Oshawa where
Lucan's Norm Hardy
showed he can race
young birds as well
as old ones by cap-
turing positions one
and two.
Brendan
Cunningham's birds
were close behind
and took positions
three and four.
Paul Finch placed
fifth and seventh.
Al de Haan's birds
took it a bit easier
and his first bird
placed sixth which
was not bad consid-
ering there were
100 birds in the
race.
Fred Hally's birds
flew well enough to
pick up eighth and
ninth spots.
Tom Hardy would
have scored higher
had he been present
to clock his first bird
when it homed.
All in all a good
beginning to a new
young -bird racing
program.
