The Crediton Jr./Intermediate. girls fastball team had a very successful season. The team were league champi-
ons and captured the silver playoff hardware after losing 1-0 in the gold round of the playoffs after forcing the
winning team to two straight games in a double -knockout format. Back row left to right, coach Tammy

BYRON - The Crediton Junior Intermediate fastball
team had a very successful season and playoff round.
The team captured the league championship with four-
teen wins and five losses. This talented group of
ballplayers also came home with the silver playoff
hardware even after three back-to-back games in one
day.
The team really gelled together and even with the hot
weather and playing with injuries, the team never gave
up. The girls obviously played their best throughout the
whole weekend.
Crediton 6 versus Ilderton 0
Crediton jumped on the scoreboard early against
Ilderton and never looked back. A very fast -paced
game found Crediton only seeing a total of four batters
or less in all seven innings.
Kerri Fulton led her team at the plate with two dou-
bles and a single. Cathy Conlin and Angie Gould each
added a double and a single apiece. Julie Prout added
two singles throughout the game and single hits came
from the bats of Carie Pertschy, Janelle Dykstra, Megan
Preszcator, Amber Preszcator and Kelli Fulton.
Superb fielding by Gould, Pertschy, Dykstra and
Conlin helped keep Ilderton's long balls from scoring a
run.
Carrie Dixon pitched a perfect game for Crediton with
zero batters reaching first on walks. Dixon also dis-
played a highly competitive change -up.
Crediton 0 versus Dorchester 2
A win on Saturday night would have allowed Crediton
a direct trip to the playoff round but it wasn't meant to
be. Crediton has all year seemed to thrive on chal-
lenges, so this loss did not faze the team in any way.
Dorchester's strong pitcher seemed to be Crediton's
demise as the hurler notched six strikeouts throughout
the game and competitively caused lots of pop ups.
Cathy Conlin pounded out a triple in the second
inning but her teammates could not seem to score her.
Single hits came from the bats of Kerri Fulton, Angie
Gould, Marianne Scott and Katie Glavin.
Marianne Scott was hurling hard balls, notching four
strikeouts.
Crediton 5 versus Ilderton 4
With the loss Saturday night, Crediton had to start
earlier than planned on Sunday morning again meeting
Ilderton who had rallied back after its first loss.
Crediton again jumped on the scoreboard early with a
4-0 lead and notching what ended to be the winner in
Old and new Hawks back on the ice
By Pat Bolen

EXETER — "If we're taking
penalties, they're only going to
be due to the fact that we were
too aggressive...no lazy penal-
ties will be tolerated," is the
attitude Exeter Hawks coach Art
Larivee says he is setting for the
team this season.
Larivee got his first look at
potential Hawks on the ice last
week in Lucan with a pair of
open tryouts that he said he was
impressed with.
"Very pleased. Very happy
with what we saw with the
returning guys and the junior
guys coming out," said Larivee,
who added there will probably
be 10 to 12 players returning
from last year.
"There will be a good core
group of players back from last
year who will contribute.
"Half the team is going to be
old and half is going to be
young," said Larivee.
The Hawks training camp is
Saturday from 6 to 8 p.m. in
Exeter with the team back on
the ice on Sunday again from 6
to 8 p.m.
Larivee said the team will be
going to the Wingham tourna-
ment again this year and have
an exhibition game scheduled
against the Ironmen.
"We'll start tactics and systems
the weekend of the 14th,15th
and 16th," Larivee said. "By the
17th we should be pretty much
picked.
"We're going to play a very
aggressive, offence orientated
game. The guys we're looking at
are the guys who can skate and
guys who have skills. It's just
going to be a little different
makeup this year than it has in
the past.
"We want to have the very best
power play in the league and we
want to take the least amount of
penalties. That's our objective."
The coach said he only wants
to see penalties taken in the
attacking zone.
"We're not taking penalties in
our zone, that's just lazy. That's
just guys who aren't picking up
assignments."
The Hawks will not be playing
against the University of
Western Ontario hockey team,
as had been talked about,
although the UWO will be taking
on another university team,
according to Larivee.
"I don't know who the oppo-
nent is yet, but we're not
involved."

the fifth. Ilderton's bats came alive in the fifth inning
and came within one run to tie the game.
Amber Preszcator reached base in the fifth inning on
a single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Kelli
Fulton, stole third base on an Ilderton error and took
the lead on a single by Julie Prout.
Adding big hits throughout the game were Kerri
Fulton and Julie Prout with two single hits. A powerful
triple by Angie Gould and doubles by Cathy Conlin and
Marianne Scott allowed Crediton to stay on the winning
end of the tourney. Single hits came from the bats of
Carie Pertschy and Amber Preszcator.
Carrie Dixon again pitched a strong game with sev-
enth inning relief by Marianne Scott.
Crediton 3 versus Dorchester 2
Dorchester scored its two and only runs in the first
inning but the local squad kept its composure scoring a
run in the third inning and two more in the sixth to win
the game.
Marianne Scott, Julie Prout and Amber Preszcator
were consistent at the plate with two single hits apiece.
Kelli Fulton was again in prime form with her sacrifice
bunts and also added a single hit. A long double to tie
the game came from the bat of Angie Gould while
Megan Preszcator, Kerri Fulton and Katie Glavin added
single hits.
Centre fielder Cathy Conlin's arm successfully threw
out girls trying to steal home. In fact, one Dorchester
player did not realize the strength of Conlin's arm as
she was the third out at home both times she tried to
steal.
Marianne Scott pitched a strong game for her team
notching three strikeouts.
Crediton 0 versus Dorchester I
Due to the double -knockout format, Crediton began
its third straight game of the day, again meeting
Dorchester. This game ended on the short end for
Crediton with a score of 1-0.
Crediton seemed to have chances throughout the fmal
game but weary bodies and injuries meant a very hard
fought game which left Crediton on the losing side.
Kerri Fulton led her team at the plate with three sin-
gles. Two singles apiece came from the bats of Julie
Prout, Janelle Dykstra and Marianne Scott while single
hits came from Carie Pertschy and Angie Gould.
Carrie Dixon again pitched a very strong game for her
team notching three strikeouts.
Catcher Julie Prout was outstanding all weekend long
playing perfectly with a lot of grit in her position .
Coach's note:
This team of talented ball players was a real pleasure
to coach not only because of their amazing fastball abil-
ity but also the way they always won and lost together
as a team
Try to catch some of this team's fastball action next
season - Tuesday nights 9 p.m. in Crediton. You will be
entertained.
