VARNA - Fifteen of the
community women set out
with Pastor Elly on Friday
morning for a Mystery Tour
which took them to Stratford
for a stroll and a drive
through the gardens and
river area and then to lunch
at Arden Park. The after-
noon stop was at Kinkora to
tour St. Patricks Roman
Catholic Church.
Everyone was quite taken
with the grand beauty and
size of this church on the
crossroads. Pastor Elly's
brother-in-law Francis Ryan
who has been the caretaker
at St. Pat's was on hand to
answer questions and treat-
ed the ladies to coffee and
pie courtesy of the Corner
Store, Varna after the tour.
Congrats to Bonnie Peck
who was married to Kevin
Langille at the home of Larry
and Lori Peck in Clinton last

Morgan and her parents
Leanne and Mike had
offered the campfire as one
of the items for the Church's
Time and Treasure Auction
earlier this year. It was a
family affair, right up to
great grandparents Arnold
and Nora joining in the fun
and enjoying the evening's
grand finale fireworks!
Sunday's beautiful weather
was much appreciated for a
garden bridal shower for Kat
Van Bergen held at the
Manse with many family and
friends in attendance. Kat

OPP increase bicycle enforcement
HURON — Huron OPP officers are
increasing bicycle enforcement in the com-
munities of Huron County.
Huron OPP Const. Jeff Walraven says,
"The OPP has used positive methods for
the past years in encouraging cyclists to
ride according to the law and wear hel-
mets. We plan on stepping up our efforts.
We will have officers on general patrol
handing out caution letters to children and
enforcement for youths who are rid-
ing unsafely and not wearing hel-
mets. But remember, helmets,
though required by law, are your
child's last line of defence. The best
method of keeping your child safe
on their bicycle is to teach them to
ride safely on the road."
After a caution letter is issued to a child,
a parent must contact the OPP to confirm
they have received the letter and the con-
tact is documented. No charge is laid when
the caution is given.
"The goal of this program is to remind
children and parents that the laws are in
place to encourage safe cycling," Walraven
says.
Officers will make contact with children
who are riding bicycles in an unsafe man-
ner or not wearing helmets.
The law requires all cyclists under the
age of 18 to wear a bicycle helmet when
riding off of private property.
Cyclists are also required to obey stop
signs and traffic signals at intersections
and use signals to indicate intentions to
stop or turn.
All of these basic skills are
practiced at local bicycle rodeos
• held by service clubs and the
OPP.
Parents can reduce the risk of
personal injury to their child by
starting the "helmet habit."
Not only is it the law for cyclists under 18
years of age to wear an approved bicycle
helmet, it will reduce the risk of serious
injury by about 85 per cent.
Parents can be charged if they knowingly
allow their children to ride without a bicy-
cle helmet.

If you are traveling on a long flight, consider
wearing compression stockings during the flight.
Wearing stockings reduces leg edema
decreasing the risk of deep vein thrombosis and
blood clots, which can occur during long flights.
Metabolic syndrome is a group of conditions
that can greatly increase your risk of heart attack, stroke and
diabetes. The conditions include: blood pressure above 130/85;
elevated fasting blood glucose of over 6; triglyceride levels of over
1.7; HDL ("good cholesterol") less than 1.0; waist circumference over
40 for men' and over 35 for women. How are you doing?
Leg cramps can really disturb a good night's sleep. Remedies that
have been tried include vitamin E, magnesium and B complex
vitamins. Some people say these help. Others say they don't.. If you
get leg cramps often, try stretching the leg muscles for a few
minutes before retiring. This sometimes help.
If you are considering buying an electric toothbrush, look for ones
with heads that rotate one way then the other. These seem to
remove plaque more efficiently than those that oscillate from side to
side.
Ifs important that you know about the medications you take.
Knowledge is the greatest tool to prevent incorrect or unsafe use of
medicines. Remember, there is never a silly question about drugs.
