Bluewater slate filling up
By Pat Bolen
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
VARNA — Candidates continue to
announce they are running in the
municipality of Bluewater for
the upcoming municipal
election with councillors
John Becker and Jim
Fergusson among those
declared.
Becker is running for
another term as councillor of
Hay East while Fergusson is
seeking another term as
councillor -at -large.
John Becker
Coun. Becker says he is
enjoying the challenge of municipal
politics."
"I'm enjoying it, it's a different
challenge. Some of our issues are
more complex than what I realized
but that is what makes the job
interesting."
Becker said the four-year
term didn't make much dif-
ference on his decision to run
again.
"This is my second term and
it takes you pretty near three
years to get into the groove to
understand what the politics
at this level is."
He added he would like to
see more progress with
Bayfield water and sewers so
the community is included in the
municipal water system.
"The growth is going to be there,"
said Becker who added while there
are fewer people living along
sideroads, infrastructure such as the
roads and drains still have to be
maintained.
"I'd like to see more roads paved
in our municipality, too...we have to
spend some money on the roads in
the near future, too, or they're
beyond our control and we're going
to have to start over again."
Becker described the Hensall
ethanol plant as "a plus, plus, plus.
It's gotta help from the farmer right
on up through. It is the wave of the
future. There is some cost with the
water and the sewer but that is part
of getting a big business."
A lifelong resident of Dashwood,
Becker is married with two chil-
dren, delivers mail for Canada Post
and volunteers with the Dashwood
fire department.
Jim Fergusson
Bluewater councillor -at -large
Fergusson said he had always con-
sidered running again for re-election
and finds the work satisfying and
rewarding.
"Anytime you can make positive
decisions which affect your commu-
nity it leaves a great deal of
satisfaction."
Fergusson said many of
the issues he supported and
has brought to the council
table aren't completed yet
and he would like to see
them finished.
One of the most impor-
tant, according to
Fergusson is the pipeline to
Hensall which he has sup-
ported with his work in the
municipality and as Bluewater's rep-
resentative on the Lake Huron
Primary Water Supply board.
"I've been committed to the Help
Clean water project to find funding
for the project and I'd like to see that
come to some kind of con-
clusion."
Fergusson said a deci-
sion on the pipeline is
required by December
2007 and the ethanol plant
coming to the community
will be a trigger for a deci-
sion.
"They have a deadline
too that they'd like to have
that waterline in place so
that will affect our timing
as too when we give the go ahead."
Another high point for the term,
according to Fergusson was devel-
oping the municipal strategic plan.
"We did that with public consulta-
tion and staff and council input.
Right now, that strategic plan is sit-
ting on the shelf gathering dust. I'd
like to see that reactivated, updated
and used when we're making deci-
sions."
With some of the planned develop-
ment for the municipality, Fergusson
said "it would certainly be nice to be
ahead of the curve."
He added with the "tremendous
potential of Bluewater, council is sit-
ting with the opportunity over the
next few years to positively affect the
growth within Bluewater and devel-
op that potential."
Referring to the environment,
Fergusson says he feels strongly on
the responsibility and obligation of
Bluewater council to protect it.
Fergusson grew up on a dairy
farm in Ingersoll and moved to
Huron County in 1992. He and his
wife Arlene have three children.

Second Huron Park property sells
HURON PARK — A second Huron Park
industrial property has sold to an existing
tenant — the Bluewater Recycling
Association.
Huron -Bruce MPP Carol Mitchell
announced the sale last week. Bluewater's
purchase comes on the heels of Dunline
Rubber's purchase of two buildings on 7.2
acres of land in the park, as previously
reported.
A staffer at Mitchell's office said prices
would not be released.
"These sales are win-win situations," said
Mitchell. "They are helping strengthen the
Huron Park community, boost small busi-
nesses that help the local economy prosper,
and ensure Ontario taxpayers get a return on
property that the province no longer needs.
The government is fulfilling its promise to
enable industrial tenants to buy the property
they currently lease at fair market value."
Bluewater Recycling Association has
acquired five buildings on a 13 -acre parcel of
land in Huron Industrial Park.
This rural -based, non-profit organization
develops and maintains facilities on behalf of
and in co-operation with the municipal sec-
tor that provides integrated waste reduction
and environmental services. These services
range from collection and processing to mar-
keting superior quality products and ser-
vices. The association employs 55 people and
services approximately 150,000 people in
63,000 households.
