McGuinty visits
By Scott Nixon
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
BAYFIELD — During one of the hottest days of the summer, electricity
consumption was the burning topic during Ontario Premier Dalton
McGuinty's visit to Bayfield Aug. 1.
McGuinty, in a swing through Huron County with Huron -Bruce MPP
Carol Mitchell, urged Ontarians to be mindful of the fact the summer time
sees peak demand for electricity. As the province set records for power
consumption last week, McGuinty said the province is asking for help
from its citizens to help conserve. Noting the province was forced to buy
power from the U.S. last week, he said demand for power in the province
has gone up while the supply has gone down.
McGuinty said Ontario has been as aggressive as possible to change that
scenario by promoting alternative energies such as wind power and by
investing into hydro and nuclear power, which doesn't contribute to glob-
al warming.
He said 2006 will be the hottest summer on record and, "We, as a
species, are influencing our weather."
McGuinty said he's doing his part for the environment. In his home, he
keeps the blinds closed and the air conditioner set at 26 C. He urged
Ontarians to replace their burnt out incandescent light bulbs with more
efficient fluorescent bulbs.
His said his fleet of cars have either been converted into hybrids or run
on an 85 per cent ethanol mixture.
Referring to the proposed $150 million Hensall ethanol plant and ques-
tions about how much local corn will be used, McGuinty said the
province's preference is to use local corn. He said the province was proud

SOUTH HURON — The list
of candidates in this
November's South Huron
municipal election keeps
growing, with two council
veterans officially kicking off
their bids for a council seat.
Current Exeter ward coun-
cillors George Robertson and
Pete Armstrong have both
decided to run again, with
Robertson running for the
deputy mayor position for
the first time, while
Armstrong is looking for re-
election as an Exeter ward
councillor.
George Robertson
It will be Robertson versus
Robertson in the quest for
deputy mayor this fall as
George Robertson has joined
the race against Crediton's
Drew Robertson (already
profiled in the Times -
Advocate). The two aren't
related.
George Robertson said he
has been thinking of running
for deputy mayor since the
last election and, after talk-
ing it over with his family
and people in the communi-
ty, he was encouraged to run
for the position.
In addition to serving on
the current term of council,
Robertson spent a term as a
councillor on the last Exeter
council before amalgama-
tion. He said with his experi-
ence and knowledge serving
on various boards such as
