Veteran Marty Merner tamed the powerful Brills batting order with a display of off -speed pitches, allow- ing only one earned run. The Express offense ignited with a 21 -hit attack as they jumped to a six -run lead in the second inning and never looked back. Leading the display was Bobby Grant with a triple, a double and a single. Vic Oliveira had three singles while Justin Hayter did his share with a triple, a single and two walks while Jason Cox had two hits. Single hits came from the bats of Aaron Patterson, Lonnie Hawke, Merner with a double and Dan Masse. There was also a homerun and single from Nick Regier who broke out of his mini -slump. Defensively Dan Masse made a superb catch in center field while Grant and Hayter combined to pick off a runner in the first inning at third base. Oliveira left the designated hitter position and made three catches in left field. It was an impressive way to carry on the Express winning streak which is now at four games. The Express face Lakeside on Friday with the two teams fighting for first place. As the other four contenders com- plete their schedules as well, the Express could fall behind one or more teams without a win. Dan Masse, catching for the first time in a long while, summed up the feelings of many players. "I'm tired." The Express battled Tillsonburg in a Saturday doubleheader and won both games by scores of 4-3 and 7-6 with last inning rallies in both games to move Exeter into first place in league play. Their record has improved to 12 wins and five losses. Derek Masse pitched game one and his thoughts of a second no -hit game were eliminated on the first pitch. Masse dug in and held Tillsonburg to eight hits over an eight -inning game. The game was close all the way with Tillsonburg scoring single runs in the first, second and seventh Meghan Darling kicks out a shot for the Exeter LDYSL U14 Girls Intermediate team July 18 in Exeter against the South End Extreme which ended 10-7 for the visitors. The Express pounded out 13 hits and had several chances to end the game, including a bases loaded rally in the seventh. Hits came from the bats of Derek Masse with three, Merner, Dan Masse, Patterson and Hawke with two each and single hits from Kemp and Nate Burns. The game was tension filled as the teams were close, as well as a colli- sion between Hawke and the Tillsonburg pitcher in a play at first base, with Hawke unable to play in game two. Kemp pitched in game two, allow- ing five runs over almost six innings of play. Tillsonburg scored a single run in the first and added two runs in each of the fifth and sixth innings as Kemp tired. Lefty Paul Elston relieved in the seventh and allowed a game tying homerun, but settled down the rest of the way to pick up the win. The Express scored two runs in the first, three in the fifth, one in the sixth and got the winning run on a Burns single in the seventh. Again the Express bats were active. Regier pounded out four hits, Burns had three and Oliveira had two, while single hits were attained by Elston, Brad Baker, Kemp, Dan Masse, Derek Masse and Patterson. Strong performances were turned in by Dan Masse who caught both games; by the second base/short- stop combo of Regier and Patterson; by Merner who played both games hurting from a serious hip problem and by the outfield of Oliveira, Burns and Baker who made several catches in the swirling wind. This is the first Express sweep of a double header against Tillsonburg, at least in the com- bined memories of those still with the team, according to spokesper- son Joe Fulop. The Express will face Lakeside without the services of their manag- er Doug Fairbairn for the next few days as he takes a much deserved vacation, said Fulop. League playoffs begin shortly after Fairbairns return.
