From Istanbul to Exeter

EXETER — The wide open spaces of Canada as well
the luxury of individual houses have been among the
differences a Turkish student has noticed while stay-
ing in Exeter with Christina and Paul Scott.
Twenty -year-old Ozge Gunaydin is on her first trip
abroad as part of the Lions Youth Exchange program
and says she didn't know much about Canada except
for Niagara Falls and that the country has a lot of
land.
Gunaydin said she also looked up Exeter on the
Internet and found white squirrels.
While she says the living styles of the two countries
are similar, the biggest difference is population with
Istanbul having 16 million people and the city she
grew up in, Adana, three million.
Like just about everyone in Turkey, Gunaydin's fam-
ily lives in an apartment since there is no empty
space in the country.
Gunaydin is going into her third year studying
industrial engineering at the University of Marmara
in Istanbul.
She says education is a priority in Turkey with her
parents both university graduates and her sister
about to start studying engineering also.
"Turkey is trying to fmd a place in the world," says
Gunaydin.
While it is still a developing country, she says every-
one is studying hard and in 10 or 20 years the coun-
try will find the respect it needs to be shown.
Gunaydin has been in Canada for two weeks and
will be here for another two.
She is spending this week at the Lions International
Youth Camp in Brantford after visits with the Scotts to
Pinery Park and shopping in London.
She says taxes are higher in Turkey than in Canada.
Along with meeting students from other countries at
the Lions camp, Gunaydin says there are trips to
Toronto and Niagara Falls planned as well as canoe-
ing.
At home in Turkey, Gunaydin says tennis and bas-
ketball are two of her favourite pastimes, although
she had to give them up due to the demands of mil-
versity.
She says she is enjoying her stay in Canada. "I feel
at home here. Christina and Paul are a great family."

West Nile Virus is a mosquito borne illness.
Check the areas around your home. Remove any
type of standing water outside (old tires,
wheelbarrows, tin cans etc.). Drill holes in the
bottom so water can't collect. Change your bird
bath water every few days. These are areas where mosquitos can
breed.
Mosquitos are very hardy. They mature from an egg to an adult in
one week. Male mosquitos usually mate and die within a few
weeks while females can survive several seasons with hibernation.
Mosquitos are more prevalent at dawn and dusk. Protect yourselves
with light coloured long sleeved clothing and insect repellents
containing DEET. Don't forget to reapply if swimming.
Although most people who are infected with West Nile Virus have
no symptoms, about 20 per cent will develop flu-like symptoms. In
rare cases, (less than 1 per cent), more severe complications can
occur.
Just a reminder about using insect repellents for children. Do not
use DEET - containing lotions in children under the age of 6 months.
For children aged 6 months to 2 years, use on application of
locations with 10 per cent or less of DEET. Don't use on face or hands
of small children so none of the lotion gets into the eyes.
