Big Brothers get boost from donation
EXETER — Big Brothers Big
Sisters of South Huron (BBBSSH)
received a boost in the amount of
$3,500 on July 12 from Dennis
and Lynda Whaling, owners of
Tim Hortons of Exeter.
The Whalings are `Match -
Makers' in the BBBSSH's
Leadership Giving Program.
Leadership donors at the Match
Maker level help ensure the 25
kids waiting will have a chance to
have their own Big Brother or
Big Sister.
Executive director Dianne
Beach, stated, "it is community
partners such as Tim Hortons of
Exeter who make a real differ-
ence for the children we serve."
Beach went on to say that
"many donors tell us that one of
the most satisfying things about
supporting Big Brothers Big
Sisters of South Huron is the
sense of making a direct impact
on a child's life. Throughout the
year, new mentoring friendships
begin, changing the lives of both
the 'Big' and the `Little' forever.
Donations to BBBSSH enable our
staff to recruit, train and support
the men and women who make
the commitment to be a mentor
for a child in need.
While every contribution is
deeply appreciated, individuals
and businesses who can make a
contribution at the Leadership
Giving Level —$2,500 and above
for `Match Makers', and $500
and above for the `Match Support
Team' have significant impact.
Leadership donors help to guar-
antee each match goes on for a
long time, even for a lifetime.
Board president Drew
Robertson encourages other
businesses to become a part of
the Leadership Giving Program.
Commitments can be made in
the form of outright contribu-
tions, multi-year pledges, and
gifts of stocks or securities and
through estate planning.
All contributions to BBBSSH are
tax-deductible, but many forms
of charitable giving offer addi-
tional tax or estate planning ben-
efits.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of
South Huron receives no govern-
ment funding and is a member
agency of Huron United Way.

Get ready to attend Varna's annual church picnic July 30
By Joan Beierling
VARNA CORRESPONDENT
VARNA - The Congregation of Varna and
Goshen paid tribute to their dedicated choir and
organists on Sunday morning with a special music
filled service of worship. Focus was on the
Psalms which encourage everyone to sing a new
song to the Lord. With plenty of help Pastor Elly
called in recruits for an impromptu choir made
up of former choir members. Lynda Smith and
Carol Hunt, Joan White, Nancy
(Mustard), Anne Lavis, Donna VARNA
Draper, Sharon Chuter and Brenda
Consitt who sang "It is No Secret" accompanied
by Mildred McAsh on the piano. To demonstrate
the difference that extra touch the choir gives
each week to the worship service, both choirs
then combined to sing the same hymn again.
Other musical gifts included Glen McGregor on
the bagpipes and the similarities between culture
and tradition and our faith were pointed out in
the reflection time.
Terri Louch sang verses of "Praise the Lord
With the Sound of Trumpet" as part of a medley

of Psalms read by readers Joan White and Carol
Hunt. Pastor Elly's message focused on John
Wesley's "Directions for Singing", especially his
admonition to 'sing lustily and with good
courage'. Beware of singing as if you were half
dead, or half asleep; but lift up your voice with
strength. Be no more afraid of your voice, nor
ashamed of its being heard.
Celebrations within the church family included
belated birthday wishes to Linda Linfield, Doug
Reid, Kate Keys and Margie Elliot. Elva Peck had
family with her to celebrate her birth-
day that day.
Congratulations were offered to
Bruce and Anna Keys in honour of their 60th
Wedding Anniversary.
Pastor Elly's family were home,
and fiance Dave from London
and son Ben and daughter-in-
law Danijelo who are now mov-
ing to Victoria B.C. from
