Express face tough games
at Lakeside tournament
EXETER — The Exeter Express
were in London for the Lakeside
tournament on the weekend and
drew two tough teams in their
pool for games on Friday and
Saturday.
Exeter lost to Oakville in extra
innings 5-4 after leading the
game all the way before
rebounding in game two and
shutting out a team from Simcoe
County, 5-0.
In the first game the Express
had 2-0 and 4-2 leads during
the game but Oakville fought
back in each case to tie the
score.
The Express offense was led by
Justin Hayter with three hits
while Dan Masse, Nate Burns
and Aaron Patterson had two
hits each.
The final two hits were from
Vic Oliveira and Lonnie Hawke.
Burns hurled the first five
innings allowing four runs on
five hits.
He struck out five batters and
walked five although a ham-
string problem limited his effec-
tiveness and he was game to
last as long as he did, said team
spokesperson Joe Fulop.
Dan Masse relieved for the
final two innings allowing just
one run on three hits and taking
the loss.
Despite that he threw well and
looked as dominating as he was
a couple of years ago, according
to Fulop, who said Masse is
rounding into form.
In game two Derek Masse per-
mitted only two hits while strik-
ing out 10 Simcoe County bat-
ters.
The Express scored in the sec-
ond inning 011 walks to Cory
Burtch and Brad Baker followed
with a hit by Patterson and a
walk to Hawke.
They scored two more in the
fourth as Bobby Grant, Hayter
and Baker each singled and
Burns added a walk.
Patterson doubled in the sixth
and was driven in by Hawke.
Hayter tripled in the seventh
and scored on a suicide bunt by
Burtch. The final Exeter hit
came from Dan Macdonald.
It was David versus Goliath as
the Express took on Milton in
game three of the tournament.
Milton is aiming for the Open
'A' category in the OBA playoffs
while Exeter plays in the 'D' cat-
egory.
To make matters worse no
regular starting pitchers were

available for the 9 a.m. starting
time.
It was left up to Hawke, a sel-
dom used reliever, to try to stem
the tide.
He did the job for the first two
innings allowing two unearned
runs.
He tired noticeably in the
third and was touched up for
four more runs by the potent
Milton hitters.
Newcomer Jason Cox relieved
for two innings giving up one
run before Grant pitched two
scoreless innings. Milton won 7-
2.
The Express hitters hit the ball
hard but right at someone all
game, said Fulop.
Exeter piled up nine hits but
could score only twice, with sin-
gle runs in the first and sixth
innings.
Leading the offence were
Burns, Hawke and Patterson
with two hits each while Grant,
Hayter and Macdonald each
had one.
That ended our chances at the
tournament, said Fulop.
The team will now look for-
ward to games in Listowel on
Friday and two games in St.
Thomas Saturday afternoon.

Smits out of retirement
EXETER — Bill Smits
is coming out of
retirement.
Smits who retired
from the game of soc-
cer in 1979 has
decided to play
another game with
the Exeter Masters
Soccer Club so he can
say he has played in
five decades of the
sport.
Come out to support
and cheer on Bill
Smits as he plays his
21st century game on
Fri. July 14 at 8 p.m.
at the South Huron
rec centre soccer
pitch. All past play-
ers, friends and fami-
ly members are wel-
come.
The 82 -year-old
Smits began his soc-
cer career in
Groningen, most
northerly of the
Netherlands
provinces as a 17 -
year -old and has
been an avid player,
coach and spectator
since he first laced
up his cleats.
For the past several
years, Smits has been
one of the Exeter
Masters main sup-
porters, cheering the
team on and donating
trophies.
Fury win 2-0
EXETER — The Exeter
Fury won their second
game of the season July
7 when they
travelled to
Delhi and beat
the home team
2-0.
The Fury
played a strong
first half, pass-
ing the ball
around nicely
and controlling
the play.
They almost
got on the board
early in the half
when Matt Prout headed
a well-placed corner
kick just wide of the net.
Exeter was rewarded
for their strong play
later in the half when,
shortly after Pete
McAllister was chopped
down, the ball sprung
loose to an open Matt
Strano and he buried it
past the keeper for a 1-0
lead.
The Fury continued
their strong play into the
second half.
Shawn McFalls almost
made it 2-0, but his chip
shot narrowly missed
the top of the net.
Ryan Carroll had a
chance as well, but once
again, the shot was high
over the bar.
Exeter relaxed into a
defensive mode part-
way through the half
and wouldn't
allow Delhi any
quality scoring
opportunities.
Darren
Marzialli put the
game out of
reach late in the
game when he
capitalized on a
beautiful passing
play from
Carroll and
Geoff Hall after
being sent in
one on one with the
keeper.
"We needed to come
out hard and play this
team well and we did
just that", Fury
spokesperson Shawn
McFalls stated following
the victory.
"We played a strong
defensive game and
were able to move the
ball up field. Our suc-
cess tonight stemmed
from our defense play-
ing a tight game and
limiting Delhi's chances.
We need to carry this
momentum into next
week's game."
The Fury's next action
is at home on Sunday at
7: p.m. versus London
City.
