THIS WEEK IN SPORTS Track meet Page 21 Express split games Page 20 Wednesday, July 5, 2006 Express split games with Lakeside EXETER — The Lakeside Lizards came to Exeter June 27 for the first of two consecutive games to be played against the Express. Both teams were short handed but it didn't seem to matter as they battled through nine innings of old fashioned baseball, said team spokesperson Joe Fulop. When the dust settled the Express held on for a 7-6 victory. Curtis Meyers drew the start for the Express and pitched five strong innings. Lakeside was able to score three runs on only three hits during his stint on the mound. The Lizards scored two runs in the third on a hit, two walks and a balk. The Express bounced back to score all seven of their runs in the fifth after the first two batters were out. Grant, Russell and Baker each had two runs batted in with Masse driving in the seventh one. Lakeside scored again in the sixth as Meyers was relieved by Dan Masse. Lakeside scored their fourth run in the eighth after Masse suddenly lost his control and walked three batters. Scott Kemp relieved and stopped the rally with a sacrifice fly out. Two Lakeside runners were also picked off as they took large leads. In the ninth Lakeside went after the victory as Kemp walked the first two batters. He settled down as the next bat- ters hit into an infield fly. Then the Lizards struck for two more hits and the game was 7-6 with the tying run on first base. Kemp bore down and retired the final two hitters with both of them hitting rockets to the outfield to end the game and the Express had a rare victory against Lakeside. Over the years Exeter has histori- cally found a way to lose games in the last inning against Lakeside, said Fulop but not this time although both clubs deserved to win. Along with playing a stellar defen- sive game Grant had two hits. This offensive performance was topped only by Patterson who went four for four with four solid singles. The three Express pitchers allowed only six hits. On Sunday the Express took on the league champions from Lakeside for the second consecutive game. The Express used ace pitcher Derek Masse in an attempt to defeat Lakeside again. Lakeside countered with their best team and were pumped up to gain revenge for Tuesday's 7-6 loss. The Express scored first in innings one and three. In both cases Patterson got on base with a double and a walk and Grant knocked him in. Masse was pitching well until the fifth when two cheap hits and two solid hits by Lakeside tied the game. Masse had no -hit Lakeside for the first four innings. The Express were able to muster only five hits in total over the first seven innings. During that same time the Lizards had four hits, all in the fifth inning In the top of the eighth inning Lakeside's first two batters were retired easily. Then disaster struck. A normally sure handed infielder missed a ground ball. Two walks and two hits later Lakeside had a 6-2 lead. The Express tried to rally in the bottom of the eighth as Nate Burns hit his first homerun. Grant and Lonnie Hawke followed this up with singles but the rally ended there. Dan Masse relieved in the ninth inning and shut Lakeside down. The Express could not get any- thing going in the bottom of the ninth and lost 6-3. On a positive note Masse allowed only six hits to the hard hitting Lakeside lineup. He struck out six. The Express had eight hits during the game. Grant had three, Burns had two including his homerun while single hits went to Patterson, Lonnie Hawke and Derek Masse. Many players took the loss pretty hard and will have to rally come next weekend at the Lakeside tour- nament. They have games Friday night and Saturday afternoon against teams from the Toronto area with possible money games on Sunday. The team's league record is now six wins and five losses, which is good for fifth place. League play resumes the follow- ing week with away games against Listowel and St. Thomas. Making the playoffs in this tough league is the goal with the top four teams playing off for the league championship Fulop said it is hoped that this dif- ficult stretch of games has better prepared the team for these and O.B.A. playoffs coming in September. There is a lot of potential and manager Fairbairn and the players have to find a way to make use of it at the right time, added Fulop. Crediton fastball team offers top-notch play CREDITON - The Crediton Laurmart Juniors/Intermediates were on the losing side of two of its three games recently. The first game was decided in extra innings, the second one decid- ed in the sixth inning and then a decisive win by a score of 11-1. Nikki Cyr, Kerri Fulton, Katie Glavin and Cathy Conlin each added a single hit. Carrie Dixon was the starting pitcher for Crediton with relief from Marianne Scott. Crediton 2 vs Byron 5 A long triple in the sixth inning seemed to be Crediton's demise against Byron allowing its opponent to score three runs. Crediton was unable to reply to even the score. Crediton's bats were alive but never seemed to be in order as the team left nine players on the base throughout the game. Kerri Fulton led her team at the plate with three singles, two sin- gle hits came from the bats of Angie Gould, Katie Glavin and Carrie Dixon. Julie Prout was left on base in the fifth inning after a double and single hits came from the bats of Cathy Conlin and Carie Pertschy. Carrie Dixon pitched strongly for Crediton notching four strikeouts. Crediton 1 1 vs Oakridge 1 Smart batting allowed Crediton to take a very decisive win from its opponent in London defeating Oakridge by a score of 11 to 1. Great defensive plays and key catches notched the win for the visiting team. Julie Prout led her team at the plate with a double and three singles with one of the singles being a nicely placed bunt.
