Motivated seniors sharpen driving skills
HENSALL —A very eventful "Seniors Month" has now
drawn to a close at Queensway and we have been grati-
fied at the involvement of family members and commu-
nity seniors in our many events during the month of
June. Throughout June we offered a selection of educa-
tional, entertaining, and fundraising events geared to
seniors.
The family information night June 20 offered the
expertise of Goderich lawyer and mediator, Norman
Pickell; funeral director, Joyce McBeath; Opp constable,
Terry Patterson; and administrator, Kathy Holdsworth.
Much valuable information was shared and those in
attendance had their questions answered by the experts.
We had a "full house" for the annual Strawberry Social
Sun., June 25 when Matin Gelina's and his band Rural
Roots entertained. VON Palliative Care Volunteer
Program was our chosen cause and Kim Winbow,
bereavement consultant was on hand with information
about their services. Almost $300 was raised for the
VON Palliative Care Volunteer Program.
Queensway Retirement Home and the Ontario
Provincial Police offered a free Driver Refresher
Seminar for seniors on Wed., June 28 in Queensway's
retirement residence activity room and 33 motivated
seniors attended to sharpen their driving skills.
Community Services Officer, Jeff Walraven presented
much valuable information with humour and expertise.

refreshments.

Tribute Sunday planned for Goshen
By Joan Beierling
VARNA CORRESPONDENT
VARNA - In a special Canada Sunday wor-
ship service the congregation at Varna United
Church raised their voices in prayers and
hymns of thankfulness of "This Land made for
you and me".
"This Land is My Land" was one of the sever-
al hymns that spoke of nationalistic pride and
gratitude. Pastor Elly Van Bergen told the true
story of a female humpback whale caught up
in fishing lines and crab nets which was suc-
cessfully rescued by divers. The story ended
with this wish: that you, and all those you love,
be so blessed and fortunate to be surrounded
by people who will help you get untangled
from the things that are binding you. And, may
you always know the joy of giving and receiv-
ing gratitude. Following the service the con-
gregation gathered on the lawn for ice cream
sundaes, compliments of the Corner Store and
fresh raspberries and Saskatoon berries from
Marg Hayter.
Next Sunday, July 9, church will be in Varna
and on July 16 will be a Tribute Sunday in
Goshen. The annual picnic service will be July
30 at the complex.
The community is collecting for a wedding
gift for Bonnie Peck. Donations can be
dropped off at the store or passed on to any
UCW member by July 15.
The Grand Opening for the Corner Store was
a grand success. New Owners, Terri and Elly
welcomed approximately 100 people who
stopped in for coffee and muffins on the house
and enjoyed browsing the new store and lis-
tening to Gladys Van Egmond's music on the
keyboard. Sharon Chuter won the door prize
which was a pair of tickets for the upcoming
fish fry at the complex Aug. 6. sponsored by
the Stanley Recreation Committee. You can get
your tickets from any one of the members.
Willi Laurie and Leanne Colclough who took
part in the area public schools' "Hairs the
Challenge" to raise money for the Cancer
Society reported that five schools raised
$22,000. The Congregation expressed con-
gratulations and admired Willi's new do and
Leanne's GI Jane look! Upcoming birthday
wishes were extended to Elmer Hayter
Charles Reid and Paul Consitt.
Best wishes to Helen Turner celebrating her
90th Birthday on Sun., July 9. An open house
will be held in her honour on Sun., July 9 at
the Bayfield Town Hall from 2-4 p.m. Best
wishes only!!
