Huron -Perth school boards pass annual budgets
Continued from front page
areas — that still translates into cuts in
non -classroom sectors, and very little
new programming.
"We've had to curtail some of the ini-
tiatives we might have started in the
past," Thuss told trustees at the June 27
meeting. In a subsequent interview, he
mentioned initiatives in early literacy in
this category.
"Plus, we've really had to take a look
at all areas of expenditure to make sure
we're operating as efficiently as possi-
ble."
Avon Maitland trustees heard a similar
story from business superintendent
Janet Baird -Jackson — remarkably sim-
ilar, in fact, when it came to cuts in non -
classroom areas and dashing hopes of
introducing new literacy programming.
"We have a significant gap between
anticipated revenues and planned
expenditures," states a memorandum
from staff to the Avon Maitland Finance
Committee, which was included in the
information package for the board's
June 27 regular meeting. A recommen-
dation was brought forward from that
committee to accept 2006-07 expendi-
tures of $155.8 million, up from $156.2
million the previous year. Balance was
accomplished through the draw -down of
a $584,608 Retirement Gratuity reserve
fund.
Not surprisingly, bussing costs remain
a sore point for both boards, as they
continue to await revisions to the
province's approach to transportation
funding. And the similarities between
the situations for the two boards don't
end there.

She would also like to see
the `main streets' of local
towns revitalized.
Infrastructure — sew-
ers, water, roads and
bridges — is another
"huge issue," Varley says.
If she is successful in
her bid for council, Varley
says she wants to see
communication between
South Huron and the pub-
lic improve — she said it's
difficult for ratepayers to
get some information
from the municipality.
Varley describes herself
as an honest hard work-
er.
"I am a person who
likes to achieve what I set
out to do," she says,
adding that as a young
female, she represents
change for South Huron
and hopes to get younger
voters participating in
November. She said if
elected she will "give 110
per cent" to help all con-
stituents.
Varley is a

works mostly in the
Ilderton and Lucan loca-
tions, but also in Exeter

REGIONAL WRAP
Grey's 150th
GREY — A weekend packed with activities will
mark Grey County's 150th anniversary this week-
end, according to The Huron Expositor.
A committee of about 30 organizers have created
events from July 7-9 around the Ethel community.
Co -chairperson Alvin McLellan says, "Everything
is coming together quite well.
The weekend kicks off with a talent show Friday
at 7:30 p.m. in the Grey municipal office.
A ball tournament and beer garden are also
planned.
Other events include a parade, fun fair, dances
and more.
Curtis Cadman walk
PARKHILL — About 150 walkers and riders par-
ticipated in the sixth edition of the Curtis Cadman
Memorial walk recently at the Great Canadian
Hideaway resort outside of Parkhill, reports The
Parkhill Gazette.
Pledges totalling more than $10,000 were raised,
making the overall amount over six years more
than $82,000 for London's Child Health Research
Institute.
Bernice Cadman, mother of Curtis and three sur-
viving children says, "It was a very successful walk
again."
Bernice and Dwayne Cadman are still collecting
donations.
If interested contact the Cadmans at 519-294-
0923 or mail your donation to the Cadmans Post
Office, Box 786, Parkhill.
Clinton cluckin' party
CLINTON — Clinton's PlucKinFest starts tomor-
row, running until July 9, according to the Clinton
News -Record.
The 10th annual fundraiser supports many local
organizations and charities around Clinton and
area.
A variety of events are planned including a slo-
pitch tournament, Car and Bike Show & Shine and
barbecue.
Last year thousands of people came out, raising
$18,000.
announcements of the magnitude of
each board's "Foundation Grant." To
further complicate the process, there
were also changes in how certain funds
were delivered; of particular importance
to both Huron -Perth and Avon Maitland
were significant decreases in the
amounts devoted to small and distant
schools, with those funds allocated
instead to making sure there's a princi-
pal and secretary in every school.
Both Baird -Jackson and Thuss admit-
ted they hadn't yet had time to analyze
whether or not their boards ultimately
lost or gained through the transaction.
But concern was expressed at both
meetings about the fact other boards,
which hadn't previously benefitted from

small schools money, may have ulti-
mately ended up with more funding.
"I'm suspicious we kind of suffered,"
said Huron -Perth management commit-
tee chairperson Ron Marcy.
Adding to the complication was the
near -passage (the Act now needs only
approval of the Lieutenant -Governor) of
Bill 78, a set of amendments to Ontario's
Education Act which includes two extra
Professional Development days for
teachers.
That demands slight adjustments in
projected budgetary needs for trans-
portation and supply teachers, and even
a re -writing of school year calendars
that had already been submitted and
approved by the Education Ministry.

HANDSOME THREE BED -ROOM Plan No.10-4-211 This handsome three-bedroom, two-storey recreation home, with its steeply pitched metal roof,
boasts multiple sundecks for outdoor living and will enhance any alpine or lake -view property. Entry is through a gable -covered porch, set at an angle
and defined with wooden pilasters. The door is flanked by sidelights. To the right of the spacious foyer is the kitchen, with a generous pantry, a raised
eating bar and a C-shaped counter configuration that promises efficiency. This room overlooks a screened porch. Thanks to its proximity to the kitchen,
it could be used as an informal dining area in warm weather. Beyond is the great room, where a partly vaulted ceiling adds drama. The built-in fireplace
will make this room popular with family members and guests in cooler weather. The room opens onto a large sundeck for summer -time relaxation and
al fresco meals. The formal dining room is adjacent to the foyer, and boasts a partly vaulted ceiling. Also on the main floor is the third bedroom, with its
own three-piece bathroom and sundeck. Stairs nearby lead to the second floor and to the unfinished basement. Upstairs, the master suite occupies an
unusually shaped room that is spacious enough to include a window -side sitting area. There is access to a sundeck. The ensuite, shared with the
second bedroom, is of substantial size and contains a linen closet. Overlooking the back garden is the library, which shares a sundeck with the master
suite, and could double as a guest bedroom or entertainment centre. The home's exterior is finished in wood siding. Cross -braced gables and a stone
foundation lend a European air to the design. This home measures 44 feet wide and 49 feet, 10 inches deep, for a total of 1,926 square feet. Plans for
design 10-3-211 are available for $554 (set of 5), $631 (set of 8) and $680 for a super set of 10. B.C. residents add 7% Prov. Sales Tax. Also add
S25.00 for Priority charges within B.C. or $45.00 outside of B.C. Please add 7% G.S.T. or 15% H.S.T. (where applicable) to both the plan price and
Priority charges. Our 38th Edition of the Home Plan Catalogue containing over 300 plans is available for $13.50 (includes taxes, postage and handling).
