Exeter played well throughout the game and got on the board first in the opening half on a pretty breakout play. Shawn McFalls fed the ball to Tom Phouttharath who found his brother, Pete. The latter Phouttharath darted up the sidelines and fed Darren Marzialli in the middle. Marzialli found the back of the net with the game's first goal. Marconi got on the board when the defend- ers failed to clear the ball. The Marconi winger fed a pass into the mid- dle and the striker made no mistake with a low shot to the corner. They made it 2-1 on a cross from the right wing and once again the striker made the Fury pay. Pete McAllister almost tied the game late in the first half when Ryan Carroll found him on a corner kick. McAllister settled the ball, but fired it over the net. In the second half, Exeter pressed for the equalizer, but missed on several opportuni- ties. Marconi put the game out of reach on a hard shot from the top of the 18 -yard box that was just out of the reach of Ryan Masse's hands. Team spokesperson Shawn McFalls stated, "We played a pretty solid game tonight. Marconi capitalized on a few of their chances and we didn't get the bounces we needed. We have a couple weeks off until our next game, so we'll work on a few things and come out hard versus Delhi." (photo/Scott Nixon) Seniors keep hold on first EXETER — Injuries are starting to have an effect on the Co-op Seniors, as they split a pair of games last week according to coach Jeff Keller. Exeter went through the busiest week in their schedule this year with two starting pitchers out and two other regulars out with injuries. They were lucky to come out of the week with a split, said Keller. Mitchell 6, Exeter 5 The first game saw Exeter travel to their arch -rivals in Mitchell Wednesday night for a pitchers dual. Jon Brand, who is the only start- ing pitcher left in the line-up after Rick Regier and Terry Hogg are both sidelined with broken bones, got the start, and pitched well, said Keller. Mitchell got on the scoresheet first, scoring a run in the top of the first. They then scored another run in the third inning after Brand gave up his first hit of the game. Exeter had trouble scoring run- ners as they twice had men on third with nobody out and failed to score a run. They left seven run- ners on base. In what seems to be an ongoing theme with the Seniors, said Keller the score remained 2-0 until the top of the seventh when Exeter fmally woke up and started scoring some runs. "I wish we could score some runs early in the game," mentioned Keller. "We seem to always be coming back from behind and waiting until the last minute to do it." Mike Angew led off the top of the seventh with a base hit, and reached third on walks by Jon Brand and Mike Seip. With one out, Keller hit a double over the third baseman's head and scored two runs to tie the game. Exeter wasn't finished however, as Brand scored on a wild pitch and Keller scored on a hit by Dave Gingerich, who later scored on a hit by Matt Iredale. Exeter's lead didn't last, as some timely Mitchell hitting and an error allowed them to tie the game in the bottom of the last inning. "Mitchell wanted to play one more inning. We don't play out ties in our league, but it is pretty hard to argue against an extra inning when they are already on the field," mentioned coach Jason Finkbeiner. It turned out to be a costly inning for Exeter, as Mitchell scored the winning run in the bottom of the eighth off reliever Mark Laye. "Laye pitched well, they just exe- cuted the run well. Lead-off walk, they bunted him over to second, then a base -hit to bring him in for a win," said Keller who led the offence with a double and a single Brand had a triple and Matt Iredale rounded the hitting with a single. Brand pitched seven innings allowing five runs on four hits, seven walks, and six strike -outs. Exeter 8, Strathroy 7 Exeter rebounded from their dis- appointing loss against Mitchell with a win on Saturday in Strathroy. Exeter finally had some good news on Saturday, as they wel- comed an addition to the pitching staff, Scott Russell. Russell started the game and pitched well, throwing five innings, allowing just six hits and walking just three batters. He also struck -out three batters. Three of the five runs he allowed came in the first. "Scott looked great out there. It took an inning for him to get going, but that is understandable given that he has not pitched for the past five years", mentioned Keller. "I think we were all really impressed and he is going to make a very nice addition to our pitching staff." Exeter fmally got on the board in the seventh inning when Seip hit a line -drive over the left field fence for his first homerun of the season, scoring Keller who was on base with a hit. In typical Exeter fashion however, said Keller they waited until the final inning to win the game. Down 5-2 in the top of the ninth, Exeter had some work cut out for them as they began the comeback. With Matt Johns, Iredale and Keller all on base with two walks and a hit, Dave Russell hit a shot up the middle, followed by hits from Seip and Tim Masse to take a 7-5 lead. "I really wish we wouldn't wait until the final inning," commented Seip. "It is really too much to han- dle. However, a win is a win." Seip pitched the last four innings, and shut down the Strathroy bats in the bottom of the ninth to seal the victory. Seip also led the offence with a home run, and three singles. Keller had three hits of his own. Scott Russell also made his mark at the plate, belting out a double and single, with Dave Russell, Finkbeiner, Tim Masse, and Johns all contributing with a hit of their own.
