HURON — The second annual Huron
United Way Amazing Race fundraiser was
another success, raising over $14,000.
Nineteen teams of two took part in
Saturday's county -wide competition, which
saw participants testing their skill and
nerve against a variety of challenges.
Mary Brooks of Kincardine and her sister
Sandi Brooks of Goderich took home the
$1,500 top prize.
"We're really happy," Huron United Way
executive director Kim Payne said of the
race. She said participants who competed
in the first Amazing Race and on
Saturday's said organizers "did a much
better job this year ... it was a very
smooth day ... It went really well."
About 100 volunteers helped out with the
day, Payne said.
"It takes a lot of people to rim this."
Participants had 34 stops along the way,
the least favourite of which saw partici-
pants searching inside 'cow patties' for film
canisters which contained clues.
"We did give them gloves," Payne says,
"and there was a wash-up station, but they
hated that one."
At the Turkey Run Ranch north of
Belgrave, competitors had to saddle a
horse and ride it through an obstacle
course.
"Most of these people have never been
near a horse, let alone on it, so it was really
fascinating to watch them," Payne said.
Competitors had to ride through a field of
cows, feed a herd of longhorn cattle and
rope and brand a calf (with paint, not a hot
brand).
A favourite of the competitors was target
shooting at Maverick Paintball in Zurich.
There were also water activities in Grand
Bend, a hunt for a red bean inside a tub of
white beans at Thompsons in Hensall and
physical challenges at Exeter's South
Huron Golf and Fitness Center.
Things wrapped up in Goderich at
Wicked Willy's Pub, in which participants
had to search for fresh oysters in a horse
trough filled with ice water and live lob-
sters. Once they found three oysters, they
had to shuck them and find people in
Wicked Willy's to eat them.
"You should have seen the look on their
faces when they pulled out the live lobsters.
It was so funny," Payne says, adding that
DVDs of the day will be sold to the racers.
Plans are already under way for a third
Amazing Race. Payne said 12 teams have
already signed up.
Sisters Sandi, above left, and Mary Brooks, won Saturday's Huron United
Way Amazing Race, competing in a variety of challenges across the coun-
ty. Over $14,000 was raised, with 19 teams of two taking part.Above,
