TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
HENSALL — Hensall District Co-op
(HDC) recently won an award as the
Safest Large Private Fleet in Canada.
This is the second time HDC has
been honoured with this award, also
won winning in 2004.
The award was presented by the
Private Motor Truck Council of
Canada as part of their annual con-
ference in Niagara on the Lake, and
was sponsored by the Zurich
Insurance Company.
Mike Million accepted the award
on behalf of HDC and Ivan
Herrington accepted it on behalf of
HDC's professional drivers.
The award is open to all private
fleets in Canada. Companies that
wish to enter must fill out an appli-
cation about rules, regulations, safe-
ty policies and must supply docu-
mented proof of the safety and train-
ing programs. The company must
also provide proof of how many
miles they have travelled as a fleet in
the year of 2005, and all accidents
or incidents the fleet was involved
in.
There are three awards in this cat-
egory, small, medium and large
fleets.
HDC is a company with over 4,500
members. The trucks are used with-
in the company to move the compa-
ny's own agriculture products,
grains, beans and corn. They are
delivered to railyards in the Toronto
area, and are forwarded to cus-
tomers as far as in Asia and Europe.
"It feels pretty good to win this
award again," says Millian. "It's a
good honour to receive. Big trucks
are most visible on highways, and
they don't always get good recogni-
tion, so this award is a good way to
portray the safety procedures the
drivers go through."
Millian said "Programs cannot and
will not be effective without the sup-
port of management, and most of all
it takes a proud and talented group
of professional drivers."
Hensall District Co-op has some of
the "best professional drivers in the
industry," said Million. "All employ-
ees should be very proud of our
Commercial fleet at HDC."

BY DEBBY WAGLER
EVERY YEAR AT THIS TIME OF YEAR I AM REMINDED ABOUT
STRAWBERRIES! FAITH -ANN'S BIRTHDAY IS CLOSE TO THIS
DATE AND WE MADE IT A TRADITION TO HAVE A DESSERT
WITH STRAWBERRIES. IT IS OFTEN A GLAZED STRAWBERRY
PIE. SINCE I ALREADY PUT THAT RECIPE IN THE PAPER I
WANTED TO PUT ANOTHER FAVOURITE IN FOR AN AMAZING
STRAWBERRY SHORTCAKE! WHEN I WAS GROWING UP WE
OFTEN MADE A WHOLE MEAL OF THIS ON THE DAY OUR
FAMILY WENT STRAWBERRY PICKING! IT WAS ALMOST
WORTH THE HOURS SPENT ON OUR KNEES IN THE
STRAWBERRY PATCH!!
STRAWBERRY SHORTCAKE
2 cups flour
1/4 cup white sugar
4 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 cup butter or margarine
I egg
2/3 cup milk
Mix till crumbly, in a large bowl, first 5 ingredients. Beat egg
till frothy and stir in milk and then pour into crumbly mix. Stir
with a fork to make a soft dough. Turn out onto a lightly
floured surface and gently knead 8-10 times. Pat into a
flattened dough about 3/4 to I inch thick and cut into circles
with a glass. Put on a greased cookie sheet and sprinkle with
granulated sugar. Bake at 425 for about 15 minutes till
slightly browned. Serve cut and open, covered with sweetened
sliced strawberries and real whipped cream for a WOW
dessert!
