(photos/submitted) By Nina Van Lieshout TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF CLANDEBOYE — Sisters Sarah and Rachel Cunningham of Clandeboye each earned a gold medal recently at the 2006 Junior National Taekwondo Championships in Saskatchewan, Sask. Winning the cham- pionship at the Saskatchewan Athletic Complex qualifies Sarah to represent Canada with 15 others aged 14-17 years old in Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam July 21-31. This will be Sarah's first time competing out of Canada or the U.S. "I'm completely ecstatic," says Sarah. "It's pretty sweet. This is my first big international experi- ence," she adds. Sarah has compet- ed in many competi- tions throughout Canada and the U.S. This particular experience began in Dartmouth, N.S. at the end of May with the Senior Nationals. The event divided into male and female, 18-30 year olds with eight differ- ent weight classes saw Sarah win all three matches she fought in against girls from Nova Scotia, Manitoba and as close as Sarnia. This earned Sarah a place in the round robin matches in Vancouver which determines who makes the Senior Canadian Team for the Senior Pan Am Championship in Argentina in November. Her fourth fight for first place was against the current Canadian champion, Karine Sergerie of Quebec, but with Junior Nationals less than two weeks away and concerns of injuries, Sarah with- drew from the final fight, leaving her in second place. The Junior National competition is divid- ed into three divi- sions, A, B and C, depending on age. Sarah was in A, 14- 17 year olds and Rachel in B for 11-13 year olds. C division is for the 10 and under age group. Rachel, fighting in her first nationals was pleased with her win. "Yes, it was my first gold medal for a black belt competi- tion," says Rachel. "It feels really good," she adds. Rachel fought Mackenzie Shaw of Ontario instead of a competitor from Manitoba, who with- drew from the com- petition. Shaw had beaten Rachel before this past April in Cobourg. This time Rachel beat Shaw 8-1, something her dad Allan says was "very satisfying." Sarah competed at the Junior Nationals for a final time, beat- ing Quebec, British Columbia, Alberta and Jenilee Maclsaac of New Brunswick for the win of 2-0. Sarah also com- petes this weekend in Montreal for points, determining if she will represent Canada in Thailand at the World Cup as well as the Pan Am Qualifier in Columbia later this year. Allan was invited to refer- ee both national events, as well as the Montreal event. Allan, Sarah and Rachel have been pleased with all of the hard work, sup- port and dedica- tion from coach Master Greg Bauer of Waterloo, Master Kim In Kyung of Toronto, whose club they train at and Lois, who looks after everything while they are travel- ling the country.
