Millions lost, over 6,000 pigs killed in fire
A fire late Saturday night at 6615 Whalen Line killed more than 6,000 sows and piglets and caused an estimat-
ed damage of $4.25 million. Lucan-Biddulph fire chief John Riddell said the department received the call at
about 1 1:30 p.m. Saturday night. Also responding were Biddulph-Blanshard firefighters and tankers from Ailsa
Craig and Huron Park. Riddell said the main centre of the barn was engulfed by flames when firefighters
arrived."I would say about 200 feet of the building" was in flames, Riddell said, adding it was like fighting four
barn fires at the same time. He estimated the multi-million dollar pig barn, about five to six years old, was 750
feet long and 125 feet wide. He said firefighters were hoping the firewalls in the attic would hold, but all they
did was "slow it down for maybe a minute and a half to two minutes, then bang, it just went through them like
they weren't even there." Firefighters were on the scene for three and a half hours. The barn is owned by 3M
Swine. There were no injuries and the fire is not considered suspicious. (photo/Scott Nixon)
Grant coming for water pipeline
By Scott Nixon
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
SOUTH HURON — Mayor Rob
Morley has confirmed the munici-
pality will receive a government
grant for the approximately $14
million project to bring a new water
pipeline to Exeter from Lake
Huron.
Morley told the Times -Advocate
Monday that the government will
allow the municipality to use a
grant it was awarded from the for-
mer Ontario Small Town and Rural
(OSTAR) Development Initiative,
started in 2000 to help rural
Ontario.
He said Huron -Bruce MPP Carol
Mitchell is still working on the fig-
ures and the size of the grant hasn't
been made public yet.
Morley said the situation stems
back to about three years ago when
the municipality had to decide
whether it would improve its well
water system or go with a new
Lake Huron pipeline. When the
municipality applied for an OSTAR
grant, they were told the grant
could only be used for the cheaper
alternative, which was the well
water enhancement scenario.
The municipality eventually
decided to go ahead with the
pipeline project. Three years later
the municipality learned it was still
able to receive a grant. Morley
asked Mitchell and Huron -Bruce
MP Paul Steckle if the grant could
be used for the $6 million
Crediton/Centralia sewer project.
They tried, Morley said, "but
nobody would let them do that"
because the money was deemed for
the well project. The government
has now decided the municipality
can use the OSTAR grant for the
pipeline project because it is a
water improvement project, like the
well enhancement project would
have been.
"It's a different use, but it's the
same result," Morley said.
Other council notes:
Huron Park update
Speaking at council's June 19
meeting, Morley spoke positively
about the $8.5 million sale of the
residential side of Huron Park to
Parkbridge Lifestyle Communities
Inc.
Morley said he met with
Parkbridge earlier in the day and
the company has "exciting plans"
for Huron Park's future.
He said he was happy with what
he heard and added the company
plans to go public with their ideas.
"It's pretty exciting stuff."
Chief administrative officer Larry
Brown said the company has plans
for substantial improvements.
Fees increased
It's going to be more expensive to
buy a marriage license in Exeter,
after council agreed to increase the
fee from $85 to $100.
