Red Cross stages evacuation
GRAND BEND — Imagine a smouldering fire at the
Pinery Provincial Park.
The forecast calls for dry, windy weather and the local
Community Emergency Coordinator (CEMC) reports that
the fire is dangerously close to Camp Attawandaron. This
was the scenario that recently staged by the local Red
Cross in an effort to test and hone their disaster response
capacity. In this mock emergency, the fire made a move
toward Camp Attawandaron, resulting in the fire chief
calling for a 24-hour evacuation. The CEMEC then con-
tacted the Red Cross to assist. Staff members and volun-
teers across southwestern Ontario were on hand for the
event and each played a role in the exercise. Six volun-
teers and one staff member from the Stratford/Huron-
Perth branch of the Red Cross were on hand to practise
their skills and to learn from the other branches.
When disaster strikes, the Red Cross works with local
governments, emergency response personnel and part-
ner community agencies to help the people affected
through the provision of food, shelter, clothing, personal
needs and comfort.
