Byron got off to a quick start in the first inning, scoring two runs on two hits off start- ing pitcher Jon Brand. Brand settled down afterwards though, shut- ting Byron down over the next three innings Mark Laye opened the scoring for Exeter after reaching first base with a hit, stealing second and scoring on a single by Mike Seip. Laye contributed again in the second inning when he hit his second single to score Brand to tie the game, who had reached base with a single of his own. Byron did not let up however and scored two rims in the top of the fifth inning to take a 5-2 lead off reliever Mitch Iredale. However, once Iredale settled down, he pitched well, said coach Jeff Keller, striking out five batters in three innings and allowing just the two rims in the fifth. Exeter fought hard to the bottom of the sev- enth when they came to within one run of tying the game. Seip, Fred Gregus and Mike Agnew hit back -to -back-to-back singles to chase the Byron pitcher out of the game with two out. It was not enough however, as Byron's closer shut the door on the come -back to give Exeter its first loss of the season. "I am loving the way we fight back, no mat- ter what the score is," said Keller. "The character on this team is something else. Exeter 8, London Stingrays 8. It was a costly point on Sunday for Exeter as first -place Exeter took on second -place London. With Exeter leading 1-0, after the top of the second, starting pitcher Ricky Regier, on base with a walk, was hit hard in the arm with a pick -off attempt by the London starter. After taking a short time-out, Regier shook it off until he got to the bench. That is when the extent of the injury was obvious. "His arm looked pretty bad," mentioned coach Jason Finkbeiner. "We decided that he better get it looked at." Later that evening, it was confirmed Regier will miss the remainder of the season with a broken arm. "It is a big hit to our team," mentioned Keller. The injury had an immediate impact on the game. Brand took the mound with no warm-up and London took advantage of it, being patient at the plate until Brand found his stride. However, four runs later, the damage seemed to be done. In Exeter fashion however, the seniors fought back to take the lead in the sixth inning when Terry Hogg and Dave Russell both scored on a triple by Brand, who later scored on a single by Finkbeiner. Exeter took their one -run lead into the bot- tom of the sixth when London scored the game -tying run that left the game in an 8-8 tie. There are no extra innings in the Thames Valley Senior League. Russell continues to hit well, getting a double and a single, said Keller. Exeter's next game is Sunday in London ver- sus Southwest London. Express sweep doubleheader EXETER — Good hitting, a solid defense and deter- mined pitching led the Express to 6-4 and 6-2 vic- tories in a doubleheader played on Saturday said Exeter spokesperson Joe Fulop. Both games were well played as Listowel never let up. In game one the teams see -sawed back and forth until the fifth inning when the Express were able to pull away. Curtis Meyers had a spotty pitching performance but he improved as the game progressed. He allowed two earned runs over four innings on three hits and five walks. Two double plays by Nick Regier and Aaron Patterson saved his day while Bobby Grant pitched three innings of flawless relief giving up no runs on one hit to pick up the win. The Express attack cen- tred around Patterson as he had three doubles and a walk. Other major contributions came from Hawke and Regier who each had two hits. Single hits came from Grant, Justin Hayter and Dan Masse. Solid defence saved the day as several fine fielding efforts, including another double play by Patterson and Regier kept Listowel from scoring. Dan Masse pitched a gutsy effort allowing two runs on five hits over five innings. He was obviously tired from having pitched twice last weekend, said Fulop. Relief pitcher Paul Elston shut Listowel down for the final two innings on no hits, with his knuckleball work- ing to protection. The Express led the game all the way with Listowel closing to within a run by the sixth inning. The Express rallied for three runs in the fifth to carry the day. This included three dou- ble steals by Exeter run- ners. Seven hitters had one hit each which included Patterson, Grant, Nick Regier, Hayter, Elston, Jeremy Geoffrey and Regier. Both Geoffrey and Regier played their first games of the year with neither one looking out of place, said Fulop. Hawke also had two hits. The two wins improve the Express record to four wins and two losses. The Strathroy Royals came to Exeter on Sunday with revenge on their minds said Fulop. The Royals used one of their best pitchers and loaded their lineup with their best hitters and the Express countered with one of their best pitchers in vet- eran Marty Merner. When the dust cleared Strathroy was victorious by an 8-4 score. The game was close until the sixth inning. With Strathroy clinging to a 4-3 lead they were able to add four more over the final three innings Merner pitched the first seven -plus innings allowing seven runs on 12 hits. His assortment of pitches kept the Royals off balance. Lonnie Hawke finished the game, allowing one run on one hit and three walks. The Express were able to muster up four runs on eight hits. Dan Macdonald, Patterson and Hawke led the way with two hits each while single hits were pro- vided by Nate Burns and Regier. Strathroy comes to town again on Friday. The Express then travel to Tillsonburg on Saturday. Injuries, missed games and some player turnover seem to have dragged the team down a little but man- ager Doug Fairbairn and his team will hope to rectify this in the next few weeks. Kerri Fulton pounded out a double with single hits from Nikki Cyr, Amber Preszcator, Cathy Conlin, Carrie Dixon, Janelle Dykstra and Katelyn Squire. Several girls played with injuries but still played a strong game until the fourth inning when Woodstock moved ahead scoring six runs. Crediton's bats were very quiet for this game with Julie Prout pounding out a double and single hits from the bats of Carie Pertschy, Kerri Fulton, and Janelle Dykstra. Carrie Dixon and Marianne Scott shared pitching duties. Kerri Fulton was awarded player of the game. The Crediton team again proved what a small town with so much tal- ent can do against the large cities. The players should be commended for their hard-fought play through- out the whole day. With only one sub and sore joints, the girls never quit and really played hard. Julie Prout again played perfectly in all five games behind the plate.
