Lots of events
planned in
Centralia
By Mary Peterson
CENTRALIA CORRESPONDENT
CENTRALIA - Hi everyone. We
hope that you're enjoying these
sunny summer days. Don't forget
to water your patio pots and
hanging baskets during this hot
dry weather!
On these warm summer
evenings, you'll often hear the
ring of the bat as someone con-
nects with a good hit at the base-
ball park in Centralia. You may
want to stop by and see who's
there and enjoy some baseball
activity sometime soon.
Everyone's invited to an
evening of inspirational music
with Bruce Harding on Mon.,
June 26. That's next week
already! If you don't have your
tick-
ets
yet,
you can get them at the door or
contact Rev. Michelle Down.
Tickets are $15 for those over
30, and if you're under 30,
you're very lucky because there's
no charge. The concert will begin
at 7:30 p.m. and will be followed
by an enjoyable time of food and
fellowship. A musical summer
evening will be a lovely addition
to your week!
Sun., June 18 was Father's
Day. During the children's time,
Rev. Michelle invited the children
and their fathers to the front of
the church. (She informed the
dads that they wouldn't be asked
to be donkeys this time, as they
were the last time.)
The children and their dads
acted out the story of Samuel's
search for a new king, David,
from the Old Testament Lesson 1
Samuel 15:34 to 16:13. David
Lenting was chosen as the new
king for the play. All dads
enjoyed the lovely plants which
the children gave them to take
home and plant.
There were many special occa-
sions to be recognized, including
birthday greetings for Anne
Huxtable, Marjorie Johns, and
June and Bill Essery.
Congratulations to Donna and
Harvey Smith and Mary Peterson
and Rob Essery who recently cel-
ebrated wedding anniversaries.
On Sun., June 25, the Centralia
Sunday School Anniversary will
be celebrated. Congregations
from Zion West and Centralia
are invited to join with friends
and family at 11:30 a.m. for wor-
ship. Plan to stay for lunch and
fellowship following worship.
A combined worship and picnic
will be held at Centralia United
Church on Sun., July 2. Bring
your favourite potluck dish and
your lawn chair for an informal
worship service.
Remember, too, that worship
will be at 10 a.m. at Zion West
on July 9 and 23. It will be held
at Centralia United Church on
July 16 and 30. Rev. Michelle's
Lemonade Stand will be open
after each worship.
Mark the beef barbecue on
your calendar too for July 23 at
Centralia United Church!
Lots to do in the Centralia area
during these upcoming weeks.
Hope to see you there!

Firefighters train at Sexsmith airport
By Pat Bolen
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
EXETER — Exeter firefight-
ers were at Sexsmith Airport
June 15 familiarizing them-
selves with the aircraft and
facilities at the field.
The airport, located just
north of Exeter at MacDonald
Road and Airport Line, was
established in 1962 by
Leonard Greb and bought by a
group of pilots in 2000.
It is home to around 24 air-
craft with a mix of tail drag-
gers and high performance
aircraft.
The field has two grass run-
ways with a 3,000 foot east -
west runway and a 1,200 foot
north -south strip as well as a
maintenance hanger and 24
individual hangers owned by
shareholders.
Pilot Wayne Steeper wel-
comed the firefighters to the
field, saying the training was
last done a few years ago and
the pilots can see the benefit
for the visit to train new mem-
bers of the fire department
and update others.
Steeper briefed the depart-
ment on fuel storage at the
airport as well as water avail-
ability, lighting and communi-
cations, information he said
would be needed in the event
of an air ambulance being
called to the airport.

as part of a training night for the department to familiarize itself with the airport and aircraft fly-
ing out of it. (photo/Pat Bolen)
Steeper said the aircraft at
the field are built light enough
that two or three firefighters
can lift the tail and that a
screwdriver is enough to buck-
le a door.
He added that if firefighters
are trying to extricate a pilot
from an aircraft the toughest
place to go through will be the
windshield.
Steeper also noted the air-
craft fuel is 100 octane and
"very volatile," and that each
aircraft has a master switch
which cuts all electrical
power.
Following the briefing, the
firefighters examined individ-
ual aircraft, with the owners
pointing out differences
between each plane, such as
the 1946 Taylor Craft belong-
ing to Ron Helm, who said
unlike most aircraft which
have fuel in the wings, his
plane holds its fuel in the nose.
