HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Times Advocate, 2005-10-26, Page 3030 Exeter Times -Advocate Wednesday,October 26, 2005 25 years of community service for Exeter Lioness EXETER — The Exeter Lioness Club celebrated their 25th anniversary Oct. 18 at Eddington's.25 years to the day they were chartered with a ceremony at the Exeter Legion Hall in 1980. Nine of the charter members and 20 other members were in attendance at the anniversary. Lioness Joyce Eveland and Lion Larry Eveland pre- sented each Lioness with a rose in memo- ry of the late Ruth Eveland who was the club's charter presi- dent. The Lioness objective has always been to live up to their motto of "We Serve." There has never been a shortage of requests for assis- tance from needy individuals and orga- nizations so the Lioness attempted to raise money to meet these needs. Some of the early attempts to fund raise included host- ing Wintario, starting the local Ride/Walk for Cancer, the March of Dimes and assisting the Lions with the C.N.I.B. can- vass. They hosted many successful fashion shows and dances, The sold Nevada tickets, served chicken and/or chili dinners. Thanks to the hard work of the members and the generous support of the com- munity, the Lioness have been successful in their fundraising efforts and the com- munity has benefit- ed. The Lioness sup- ported the communi- ty by initiating the Green Thumb Award in their early years, the Legion on Canada Day; enter- ing the fair parade and supporting the rodeo as well as con- tributing to the drive to get a medical centre. Their sup- port of local youth has been out- standing. They have hosted for- eign youth exchange students and sup- plied meals for the Lions Youth Exchange Camp. They supported Big Brothers and Big Sisters; provided free skating and swim- ming; assisted the O.P.P with the ident- a-child program and supported the sum- mer reading pro- gram and barbecue at the library. Charter members of the club are Elizabeth Bell, Lossy Fuller, Phyllis Haugh, Judy McLeod, Sally Lou Raymond and Liz Stephens. Other members of the club include Helen Barnard, Mary Lou Becker,Tracy Bensons, Cathy Cade, Elaine Corbett,Ada Dinney, Laurie Dykstra, June Hodgins, Linda Marsden, Jackie Masse, Carolyn Merner, Shirley Mousseau, Marie Nethercott, Louise Pincombe, Elaine Pinder, Nancy Rader, Nancy Rooth, Cathy Seip, Lorna Stuart,Ann Thompson and Audrey Zachar. (photo/Pat Bolen) Huron County Christmas Bureau for many years as well as entering a float in the Santa Claus parade and most recently in their Lighting of MacNaughton Park program the night before the parade. The Lioness have also played a role in development of local parks. They provided playground equip- ment at the Rec Centre and Victoria Park, as well as building the shelter at Victoria Park and also rebuilding the fence around the wading pool. They also supplied benches for Victoria Park and the MacNaughton- Morrison Trail. The Lioness also made substantial contributions to the VELCOME Game Day! HHRfN•PERTH f CE'111f[!m nocI(ey. The Huron Perth LakersAAAAssociation held its third annual Laker Day on Saturday.This special day also commemorated the 10th anniversary for the organization with special invites to dignitaries, past executive members, sponsors, alumni and coaches.The day included the 2005-2006 teams play- ing home games, silent auctions, hockey -related competitive events and lots of NHL and Laker memorabilia. The Lioness have supported the needy beyond the local community with con- tributions to the Thames Valley Children's Treatment Centre; the Camp Dorset Dialysis Camp; the Lions Foundation of Canada Guide Dog Program; the IIealing Garden at London's University Hospital; and supplied equip- ment for the Hensall playground. The club has also twinned with the Rochester, Michigan Lioness Club and shared experiences in their meetings. The need for ser- vice minded women has never been greater and the Exeter Lioness will continue to live up to their motto while having fun doing it. Membership has varied from the mid 20s to mid 40s and women are always welcome to join. Love and care for your neighbours By Muriel Lewis GRANTON CORRESPONDENT GRANTON - At the Granton -Wesley United Church on Sun., Oct. 23, Pastor Paul Vollick led the service and the message was entitled "It's not about me." The lessons were from Deuteronomy 34, Matthew 22 and 1 Thessalonians 2. Michelle McBurney lit the Christ Candle. The ministry of music was `It is well with my soul.' The children's hymn was `Walk with Me.' At St. Paul's Anglican Church in Kirkton on Sun., Oct. 23, Rev. Dalice Sim cel- ebrated the Holy Eucharist. The message was about the second commandment, to love and respect your neigh- bour. Mary Blackler read the lessons. More get well wishes to Jean Noon (from the Granton community) who is recovering at the London Health Science Centre fol- lowing recent heart surgery. In recognition of National RespiratoryTherapyWeek (Oct.24-28, 2005), Registered Respiratory Therapists (RRTs) from Huron/Perth and the surrounding area gathered recently to share thoughts and ideas about promoting their profession in rural healthcare environments.
