SH Panthers InWOSSAA
EXETER — South Huron
was the site of the finals of
Huron -Perth field hockey Oct.
19.
The two semifinals saw
South Huron host St. Annes
and Goderich hosting St.
Marys
Both games ended 3-0 for
Goderich and South Huron,
which set up the final
between the two.
In the South Huron semifi-
nal the Panthers started
quickly and Sandra Gregus
scored from a Kelly Cronyn
pass after only six minutes,
however the game settled
down and there was no more
score before the half.
A late surge by the Panthers
sealed the victory as Cronyn
scored on a penalty stroke
after the St. Armes goalie sat
on top of the ball.
Cronyn added an extra from
a Lindsay Mills penalty cor-
ner.
In the final against
Goderich, both teams played
determined hockey with the
Panthers dominating the ear-
lier part, Goderich the middle
and the Panthers again domi-
nating at the end.
Goderich scored midway
through the second half on a
controversial goal to win the
game 1-0 and claim their first
ever Huron -Perth field hockey
title.
The team is coached by Ray
Lewis, who is better known
for his soccer coaching.

The two teams move on to
WOSSAA in Goderich today
(Wednesday)at 10:a.m.
The Panthers play the first
place TVRAA team and at
12:30 pm they play the third
place TVRAA team.
The Panthers need to place
first or second in their pool to
advance to the semifinal on
Thursday.
The top two teams advance
to OFSAA in Waterloo the fol-
lowing week.

Local riders had a successful competition at the Walkerton Little Royal
Fair last Friday, with the team of Kelsey Oke of Hensall, Sarah Jo
Kinsman of Cromarty and Alyssa Gowing of Brussels finishing first with
the fastest time of 23.35 seconds.Above and below from left are Oke,

youth team has taken home first place, competing against 161 other

Two wins for South Huron Panther basketball teams
EXETER — The South Huron District High
School Junior Girls basketball team was on the
court at home Oct. 19.
They lost their first game to Northwestern 37-22
in a good effort against a good team.
Mairead O'Rourke and Kelsey Hern each had six
points and Julie Roberts added four. Kristena

Hendrick, Kacie Erb, Jamie Glazier and Kristen
Regier also played well.
In their second game of the day against
Listowel, Roberts had 16 points to lead the way to
a 33-23 victory. Erb scored six points and
O'Rourke and Glazier each added four.
Hern, Rosie Van Elswyk and Regier also played
well.
All in all a good day from coach Terry O'Rourke.
The senior girls were also in action with a short-
ened bench against Listowel, with only seven
players.
Minus their leading scorer and rebounded, as
well as a starting post, they came out running and
scoring putting in 32 first-half points to only eight
from their opponents.
Led by Maggie Roberts with 17 points and
Melissa Smith with 14, the team used the fast
break and some good passing and layups to beat
their opponents 52-21.
Janelle Erb added 11 points with some great
outside shooting. Sierra Douglas had six points
and Stephanie Dietrich added four.
The team plays Stratford Northwestern and St.
Mikes this week in league play, sitting with four
wins and one loss on the season.

Conley.
Hensall Sherwoods split pair of weekend games
HENSALL — The Hensall Sherwoods
split a pair of games on the weekend
with a 5-2 win in Monkton Friday night
before dropping a 7-4 decision to visit-
ing Tavistock Saturday night in
Hensall.
Friday night in Monkton, the
Sherwoods took a 3-0 lead in the first
period on two goals from J.R. Davies,
including a shorthanded effort and a
powerplay goal from Dave Farquhar.
A power play goal from the Wildcats
cut the lead to 3-1 in the second but
Jeremy Geoffrey restored the three -
goal spread before the period was
over.
The teams traded goals in the third
with Chris Downie making it 5-1 before
the Wildcats added a late goal in the
losing effort.
Scott Wood picked up the win in net
with Davies, Geoffrey, MacLean,
Downie, Mike Johnson, Jeff Richardson
Jeff Finkbeiner and Jeffrey picking up
assists.
Saturday night the Sherwoods had a
2-1 lead after the first period.
But four goals in the second by
Tavistock built a 5-3 lead the
Sherwoods couldn't overcome.
The Sherwoods have a single game
this weekend when they are home to
face Monkton Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
