week as Hawks lose three of four games
EXETER — The Exeter
Hawks had a tough week
losing three of four games
including a 6-2 loss at
home Friday night against
the Lambeth Lancers and
being edged by
Thamesford 3-2 Sunday
night in Exeter.
The Hawks picked up
their lone win of the week
Saturday night in Parkhill
witha5-3 winaftera
tough loss in West Lorne
Oct. 12.
Leading 5-2 going into
the third the Hawks saw
the Lakers score five
straight goals for a 7-2
win.
But despite the results
Exeter coach and general
manager Dale Howard
said the team turned a
corner with its win
Saturday night.
"We battled hard and
everybody finally bought
into what I've been trying
to tell them since day
one...we're turning that
corner. You're going to
see this hockey team win-
ning some games now."
Wednesday night three
goals in the first period
from Darcy McCutcheon,
Paul Denomme and Craig
Masse built a 3-0 lead that
the Hawks extended to 5-
1 in the second on goals
from Jeff Ackersville and
Mike MacLean.
But the Hawks ran into
penalty trouble in the
third taking seven straight
penalties as the Lakers
took advantage with three
powerplay goals plus two
others to take a 7-5 win.
The Hawks were outshot
by a 42-33 margin, includ-
ing 20-5 in the third.
Friday night in Exeter
facing Lambeth, the
Lancers built a 3-1 lead by
the end of the first and
cruised to a 6-2 victory.
Ryan Abrams and
Denomme notched goals
in the first and second
period and goalie Jordan
Thomson made his first
start as a Hawk.
Despite giving up three
goals in the first and three
in the second, Howard
said he didn't blame his
goalie for the loss.
"He played extremely
well and I was proud of
hire."
Howard said Thomson
will be back in net to face
Belmont tonight
(Wednesday).
Despite outshooting the
visitors 30-23, plus hitting
three goalposts, the
Hawks went 0-2 on the
powerplay and gave up a
pair of powerplay goals on
five Lambeth chances.
Saturday night in North
Middlesex the Hawks
jumped out to a 2-0 lead
in the first on goals from
Justin Young and Joe
Nesbitt but again couldn't
hold a lead.
The Stars climbed back
into the game with a pair
of goals midway through
the period.
But the Hawks took the
lead again in the last
minute with a marker
from Dan Moir.
The Stars again tied it
early in the third but Ryan
Knee put the Hawks
ahead to stay late in the
game and Scott Davies
added an empty net mark-
er for the 5-3 win.
The Hawks were outshot
by a 40-32 margin with
each team getting one
goal with the man advan-
tage.
Playing their third game
in three nights Sunday
night against the Trojans,
the Hawks saw the visitors
build a 3-0 lead with one
goal in the first and two in
the second.
But the Hawks didn't
quit as Knee got them on
the board early in the
third before Greg
Thompson made it close
with three minutes
remaining with a power-
play marker.
But it was all Exeter
could get as Thamesford
hung on for the 3-2 win.
The Hawks have another
busy week after their
game versus Belmont with
West Lorne in town Friday
at 8:30 p.m. and the
Hawks visiting Mt.
Brydges Oct. 22 at 7:30
p.m.
Howard said the team is
hoping to have Jason
Stuckless back in the line-
up from an injury within a
week.
Oct. 21 will be Hensall
Public School night at the
South Huron Rec centre
and Oct. 28 will be Zurich

EXETER — At South Huron
District High School Oct. 12, the
South Huron Panthers field hockey
team hosted Stratford
Northwestern and their lack of
competitive games for over two
weeks showed as they struggled
against Northwestern.
Things looked promising when
Staci Miller opened the scoring just
eight minutes into the game.
However, things stalled and
Northwestern equalized before the
half.
Twelve minutes into the second
half, Kelly Cronyn scored the win-
ner to make the final score 2-1 for
the home team.
In the second game, the girls
came alive as they had to score to
get to the top of the league.
After eight minutes, Cronyn
scored on a nice pass by Amy
Weido.
Seven minutes later, Miller
notched her second of the day as
she tipped in a Cronyn shot.
At the half, the score was 2-0.
Hard work paid off for Cronyn as
she scored her second of the game
fifteen minutes into the second half.
Miller added another to make it
four and rookie Tiffany Hern scored
her first of the season to bring the
final total to 5-0.
Michelle Boere recorded the
shutout.
