Motel Retro a blast
from the past
By Scott Nixon
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
LUCAN — Walking into
Lucan's Motel Retro is like
a step back in time.
The Main Street busi-
ness, open since the end
of July, features vintage
televisions, stereos, cloth-
ing, lighting, phones and
barstools from the 1950s,
'60s, '70s and '80s. Nearly
all the items on sale are
true vintage; only a few
are reproductions.
Marty Gebel of London
(who owns Motel Retro
along with Jim Yeaman)
says he's pleased with the
public's response to Motel
Retro and business has
been better than expect-
ed. This is his first busi-
ness.
Gebel has been interest-
ed in retro items for about
five years and decided to
get into business when he
saw the market picking
up. He notes his business
is the only one of its kind
in Lucan.
Gebel says he decided
on Lucan as a location for
his business because the
town seemed to be going
through an evolution with
several antique shops
opening up. Plus, he liked

the busy Main Street loca-
tion.
Gebel says he likes the
colours, shapes and
designs of the vintage
items. Some of the old
stereos and TVs have a
space age look, while he
says there are also the
tacky items like a sheep-
skin rug and a fake fire-
place.
Motel Retro gets most of
its business from people
driving through town,
although Gebel says many
local teens like to check
out the vintage clothing.
Baby boomers also show
an interest because the
items take them back to
their childhood.
Gebel finds his retro
items all over — auctions,
yard sales, through ads
and he does a lot of busi-
ness on EBay. He encour-
ages anyone with vintage
items to sell to come and
talk to him.
