By Pat Bolen
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
EXETER — A 3-1 lead
midway midway through
the first period didn't hold
up for the Exeter Hawks
Oct. 7 against the Lucan
Irish, as the visitors
chipped away to end up
with a 4-3 win.
The Hawks also lost the
services of assistant coach
Jeff Finkbeiner, who has
resigned from the team
due to job and family com-
mitments.
Exeter coach and gener-
al manager Dale Howard
said he was disappointed
as Finkbeiner was a great
assistant coach.
But joining the Hawks as
Howard's assistant is
Andrew Lang.
The Irish opened the
scoring Friday night with
a goal by Kyle Smith seven
minutes into the game but
the Hawks replied with
three straight goals in four
minutes.
Paul Denomme brought
the Hawks even at 11:28
before putting them ahead
two minutes later.
Greg Thompson gave
Exeter a two -goal lead at
8:04 but it was all Lucan
after that.
The Irish cut the lead to
one goal before the period
was over on a power play
marker by Matt Blane
before tying it at 3-3 in the
second with a Trevor
Liddle powerplay goal.
Lucan took the lead for
good early in the third
with their third powerplay
goal and second of the
night from Smith and
hung on for the 4-3 win.
Picking up assists in the
win for Lucan were Kyle
Roth with two and single
points from Pat Flood, Bob
Martin and Jeff MacLean.
Troy Elder, Justin Young
and Ryan Knee had
assists for the Hawks who
had only 15 skaters
dressed.
Special teams were the
difference with Exeter
going 0-8 on the power
play and Lucan converting
three of its six chances.
The visitors outshoot
Exeter by a 35-30 margin.

By Pat Bolen
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
HENSALL — The Hensall
Sherwoods will open their
season Friday night in
Hensall with a new coach
behind the bench as Jeff
Dalrymple assumes the
head coaching duties.
The Sherwoods will take
on Listowel at 8:30 p.m.
before visiting Lucan
Saturday for an 8:30 p.m.
game.
Dalrymple said the
Sherwoods have several
familiar faces back in the
lineup with the return of
Scott Richardson, as well
as goalie Cam Becker who
will share the goaltending
duties with Scott Wood.
"Other than that, it's
pretty much the same core
as last year," said
Dalrymple.
It is the first time coach-
ing at the Senior 'A' level
for Dalrymple who has
coached at midget as well
as at the Junior `D' level
for the Lucan Irish and
Exeter Hawks.
Stepping behind the
bench for the Sherwoods
is something Dalrymple
said he thought about for
most of the summer before
accepting.
Assisting Dalrymple will
be Todd McCann, who is
also the general manager
of the team.
"I think we have a really
strong defence...the veter-
ans on the team are our
defence," said Dalrymple.
"We've skated eight or
nine times and we're look-
ing forward to it."
