wrap up
Christmas
project
kicks off
GODERICH — An
annual Goderich
Christmas drive is in
full swing. Operation
Child is a Goderich
District Collegiate
Institute project. It's
looking for donations
from the public for kids
two to 15. The gifts will
be sent to children in
Argentina, Belize,
Bolivia, Chile,
Paraguay, Trinidad,
Tobago and Uruguay,
according to the
Goderich Signal -Star.
Co-ordinator Katie
Marshall and the volun-
teers for the drive are
hoping to collect 2,005
boxes this year to fill
with donations. If you
would like to be
involved with the pro-
ject or would like more
information, contact
Sue at 524-6496 or
Joanne at 524-5996.
Cat attack
in Clinton
CLINTON — The
Huron OPP along with
the Huron County
Society for the
Prevention of Cruelty
towards Animals are
needing the public's
assistance. An incident
occurred at an apart-
ment on Joseph Street
in Clinton, according to
the Clinton News -
Record. A group of indi-
viduals stood by a man
using a pocket knife to
castrate a cat. The OPP
say one man was bitten
on the chest as he held
down the cat for the
procedure. Anyone with
information regarding
this incident is urged to
contact local OPP or
Crimestoppers at 1-
800 -222 -TIPS. A cash
reward of up to $2,000
may be eligible to any
tipsters.
Increased
flood cost
HURON EAST — An
increase in the cost of
flood control has left
Huron East council
grumbling, according to
The Huron Expositor.
The Ausable Bayfield
Conservation Authority
flood control project
along Silver Creek was
originally estimated at
$6,000. The repairs are
now costing $8,000,
with the municipality's
share at $3,600. The
improvements include a
section of the stream
that was eroding. Costs
were shared between
the Ministry of Natural
Resources, Huron East
and the ABCA. The pur-
pose was to reduce the
potential of flooding in
Seaforth.

people have of this town
when they see stuff like
that," adds Prange.
The Grand Bend and
Area Chamber of
Commerce is trying to
make positive changes.
They have five different
committees aiming to
transform the preception
of Grand Bend.
"I'd be nice to have this
town known as a com-
mercial shopping centre,
with the added perk of the
best beach Lake Huron
can offer," says Bregman.
Many new
faces in
classrooms
By Stew Slater
SPECIAL TO THE T -A
SEAFORTH — There is
a 50 per cent increase in
the number of new faces
in the staff rooms of the
Avon Maitland District
School Board this
September compared to a
year ago.
So-called "new hires"
have increased from 42
last September to 64 this
year, due largely to injec-
tions of provincial gov-
ernment money.
Human Resources
superintendent Jim
Sheppard, in delivering a
report during a board
meeting Sept. 13, noted
not all the new hires
stepped into full-time
positions.
Last June, negotiators
for the Education
Ministry and unions rep-
resenting teachers ham-
mered out a deal aimed
at averting possible
strikes and ending
extended work -to -rule
campaigns.
A major part of that
deal was establishing
provincial standards for
preparation time.
Boards were challenged
to negotiate collective
agreements that met
those preparation stan-
dards, and were provided
funding to do so.
Meanwhile, there has
been ongoing funding to
assist boards in ensuring
the average Primary
classroom size is 20 stu-
dents or less.
An initial goal to have
every Primary classroom
at 20 or less proved too
lofty, but boards are still
expected to have 90 per
cent of their
Kindergarten to Grade 3
students fit that standard
by 2008.
Although these initia-
tives may not have an
effect in some small
schools, on a board -wide
basis they both increase
the total requirement for
teachers.
There have also been
increased requirements
for maintaining class-
room space.
